Scope This policy covers all students currently enrolled in approved CIT or CIT Solutions programs who have authorised access to the Institute’s ICT resources, facilities and services Definitions Teaching laboratories Formal teaching areas with ICT or other specialised equipment 24 Hour Access ICT Facilities Institute ICT resources and services available on a 24 hour basis. Inappropriate or offensive material Includes but not limited to adult content, sexist, racist material or sites promoting crime or terrorism. Unofficial software Software that has not been licensed or approved for use by CIT students. Malware An abbreviation for malicious software, a program or file that is designed to specifically damage or disrupt a system, such as a virus, worm, or a Trojan horse. Principles 1. Institute ICT resources and services are provided for the use of students enrolled in approved CIT or CIT Solutions programs. 2. Spare computers in teaching laboratories where classes are being conducted may be used by other students, provided the teacher in charge of the class gives permission. These students are not to make demands on the teacher or cause any disruption to the class. 3. Head of Department (Teacher Band 2) or Program co-ordinator authorisation will be required before a student is given access to specialised or after hours ICT facilities (such as Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) laboratories). Colleges are to provide an approved list of Heads of Department and program co-ordinators to CIT Corporate Services before the start of each semester. 4. Students are allowed to eat and drink responsibly in all areas apart from teaching laboratories. 5. When accessing CIT ICT resources and services, students must adhere to the following acceptable use conditions. Students must not: a. access, download or store inappropriate or offensive material. This includes adult content and other offensive material. b. intentionally send unauthorised widespread mail-outs or chain letters or other malware, eg viruses. c. intentionally create, send or access information that could damage the Institute’s reputation, be misleading or deceptive, result in victimisation or harassment, lead to criminal penalty or civil liability, or be reasonably found to be offensive, obscene, threatening, abusive or defamatory. d. save or copy unofficial software and/or large personal files greater than 2MB, to any network drive. (e.g. non-standard graphics, screen savers, ‘.exe’ files, music and/or video files). 6. The Institute will log and monitor all ICT related activity on network infrastructure equipment and applications and will take disciplinary action against students found to be in breach of this policy as stated under the Unsatisfactory Student Behaviour Policy. The following principles apply to student use of 24 Hour Access ICT Facilities 7. Students must pay the specified fees to have a 24-hour entry card which enables entry to all CIT 24-hour Access ICT Facilities. 8. Students using 24-hour Access ICT Facilities or other specialised or after hours ICT facilities must carry CIT identification. 9. Students using these facilities must not give entry to any other persons.
