Description of ICON Advanced Placement Classes ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) ICON Advanced Placement English Language and Composition (12 Units/Year Long Course) Offered primarily to Juniors, English 11 Language and Composition is a college-level course examining rhetoric in the context of American Literature, with an emphasis on nonfiction. Students in this course will be exposed to a wide variety of literature from various eras on various topics and will analyze the purpose of the authors and how the authors achieved their goals. Both fiction and non-fiction will be used to determine how text becomes meaningful, effective and purposeful. With an emphasis on expository, analytical and argumentative writing, the students will practice and refine forms of writing that will serve them well in the academic and professional community with a mature understanding of audience and purpose. In addition to reading selections critically and discussing rhetorical and literary techniques, students have the choice to take the AP exam in May and earn from 3-6 college credits for taking this course. ICON Advanced Placement United States History (12 Units/Year Long Course) Offered primarily to Juniors, the purpose of AP US History is to use the study of American History in order to understand the story of our nation and our people. By looking at the historical events themselves, primary sources written during the era, and historical interpretation and analysis, students will experience a thorough and in-depth treatment of the historical material. The ultimate goal of this course is to prepare students for the AP exam, but in doing so students will be exposed to a rigorous academic regimen, develop strong study and writing skills, and most importantly to intellectual material that demonstrates there is so much more to the study of history than memorization of names, dates, and places. In addition to being exposed to rich and in-depth academic material, students have the choice to take the AP exam in May and earn from 3-6 college credits for taking this course.
