Science Department 2013 Summer Assignment
All students must do Part 1, 2, and 3. Your science teacher will collect all the parts the first
week back in September 2013. Cycle 1 Progress Report will reflect your participation in this
assignment.
Part 1: Research
New York has faced numerous natural disasters in the past few years including an earthquake, tornado,
microburst and most recently Super storm Sandy. These natural disasters affect humans as well as
animals and the environment that they live in. You will research Hurricane Sandy and document the
effects it had on New York City and the surrounding areas. You will be required to answer the following
research questions and attach to your project. Please site 3 sources.
1- How is a Hurricane different from a Tropical Storm?
2-Describe the four dangers associated with a hurricane (High Winds, Ocean waves, Storm Surge, and
Flooding)
3-How did people prepare for this Hurricane?
4-How was the government preparing for the hurricane? (Include buses, trains, airports, Roads, people)
5-What were some problems many people had while the storm was moving past New York?
6-Discuss some of the problems people faced who lived by the ocean (such as the Rockaways and Long
Island). What was the impact?
7-Discuss some of the problems the government and people are having now that are due to the storm?
8. How were animals affected by the storm? Describe at least 2 different animals and how they were
impacted.

9-How can you be better prepared for future hurricanes?
10- Why did students have a hard time starting classes after Hurricane Sandy was over? List at least 2
ways that might impact the student? Society?
11-Why do people still leave near the coast knowing the dangers they can face such as a hurricane? How
can they prepare for future storms?
12- How can the government protect the coast and the people who live near the coast from future
storms?
13- What can we as a society learn from this experience? What have you personally learned?
14. What is Global warming? What are the causes and effects?
15. Why is Global Warming a controversial topic?
Part 2: Argument Writing
“Scientists attribute devastation by Hurricane Sandy to the effects of Global Warming”
Based on your research, write a one page argument paper taking a stance on the controversy above.

Paragraph 2: Global Warming controversy (What are the two opposing sides on this issue)
Paragraph 3: Your stance on the controversy with at least 3 supporting facts.
