Host a Foreign Exchange Student??
The Ruperts began hosting exchange students with Frau Boudreau's GAPP program when
our son Jake ('08) was a sophomore. Meanwhile, Jake also got to know many of the full
year exchange students when he joined the soccer team, and it was when I sat next to one
of the host moms at a soccer game that I began to become enlightened to the joys of
hosting exchange students.
To make a long story short, the youngest Rupert graduated from high school last year, and
this May we are approaching the end of our fourth school year as host parents of exchange
students at CSAS.
In addition to our GAPP student, Erik Meibert, from Berlin, we have had the pleasure of
hosting Jonah Gerth from Amersfoort, the Netherlands, Marco Dellacorna from Milan, Italy,
Abraham Azar Lemus from Campeche, MX, Paco Juarez Mayoral from El Escorial, Spain.
Some of your kids might know the students we are hosting this year: Flo Mory, a
sophomore from Angers, France and Rodrigo Toledo Guillermo from Campeche, Mexico.
Although the time is approaching when the Ruperts need to move on, it isn't in 2011. A few
weeks ago I received this message from Malte Duersen from a small town outside of
Hannover, Germany, who will be living with us next year along with Vidal Olmedo from
Quito, Ecuador.
To me, Malte's note captured why it is so important to host exchange students.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Rupert,
this is Malte from Germany.
I am thrilled about living in Oklahoma City. When I got the letter with your address,
everthing about my stay suddenly became more real. Because before receiving the letter
there was always a little voice saying : If someone will take you, just if, you will go to the
USA.
But with opening the letter all pressure got released and turned into happiness and
gratitude and I started telling everyone about that someone being so kind to take me. I
think all of my friends knew with the next day where I'll be next year. And they all found it
awesome, too.
Oklahoma City has for sure many interesting sites, last but not least for someone who is as
mad at basketball as I am, a NBA team, but I am sure there's much more what you can tell
me.
***
Let me say again that I am very grateful that you host me.
I would be happy to write you again very soon.
Greetings from Germany
Malte
Every year there are so many young people from around the world who would love to spend
an academic year in the U.S. Classen has always welcomed exchange students, which
especially complements the International Baccalaureate Program.
There will be some students who come to Classen on a temporary placement next August
because it is so difficult to get families to commit in advance.
Please consider opening your home to one (or two) of these wonderful young people.
(There is nothing in it for me except helping these kids find good homes.)
Yours truly,
Barbara Rupert
HELP!!!
9TH GRADE IB PARENTS
SURVEY REQUEST
Attention all parents of current freshman Pre-IB major student. My name is
Susan Hood, and I have two daughters at CSAS in the IB program. I am a
graduate student and am currently working on my dissertation. I have selected the
IB Program in Oklahoma as my topic in order to award more attention to the
program and hopefully allow our students the credit deserved for the effort they put
forth. I am sure you recognize the positive attributes of the IB program as well as
the rigorous study that is involved. I want the rest of Oklahoma to recognize this
great program. As part of the study, I am surveying students who have/will
graduate in 2009, 2011, and 2014 who are IB majors. In addition, the study will
address the perceptions of Oklahoma university officials regarding the need to
continue or expand the program in the state and options for improved support.
The research will be conducted using the following procedures: The questionnaire
consists of 21 Likert Scale questions and seven open ended questions. The
questionnaire will take place electronically. The process should take approximately
5 to 10 minutes to complete. No names or ID is included on the questionnaire.
Once the student clicks submit, the survey will be complete.
I have already surveyed the 2009 and 2011 students. However, I am still lacking a
large population of freshman (25 out of 88 have consented). So this is where you
can help. I need to survey your child is order to do this research. However, I
cannot survey them without your consent.
My request is as follows: Please email to me (susan.j.hood@okstate.edu or
susan.j.hood@boeing.com ) or send a note to school with your approval.
Remember to add your child’s name to the email or paper. The survey will be
done online during their English class on May 18th and 19th. Without your
consent, they will not be able to take the survey. PLEASE HELP!
Should you have questions concerning this research, you can contact Susan Hood,
405-823-5576, susan.j.hood@okstate.edu or Dr. Mary Kutz, OSU-OKC, 6420 S.E.
15th St, Tom Steed Bldg, Midwest City, OK 73110, 405-733-7940, or
mary.kutz@okstate.edu. If you have questions about your rights as a research
volunteer, you may contact Dr. Shelia Kennison, IRB Chair, 219 Cordell North,
Stillwater, OK 74078, 405-744-3377 or irb@okstate.edu.
