INFORMATION TO VISITING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, CLINICIANS AND PERSONS INTERESTED TO DONATE DRUGS
AND MEDICAL DEVICES

Dear colleagues and visiting students;
Thank you for your interest to visit Kamuzu Central Hospital. Please find some information below on readings, registration, personal equipment
and lodging, that you may useful for your stay at the Dpt. of Medicine of Kamuzu Central Hospital. After your stay please share further information
with us that may help international visitors.
In the past, many visiting clinicians and students expressed their wish to support the Dpt. of Medicine by donations. For this purpose the members
of the Dpt. have developed a list of useful items. Currently we prefer to receive the below named goods over money transfers. Please understand
that these are voluntary donations.
Attached you will find a list of equipment that will be of great use at any time.

The Medical Department at Kamuzu Central Hospital is organized in 4 Teams: A, B, C and D. Each team is consisting of a Head of Firm (usually a

In-patient HIV clinic: Medical Specialist Clinic Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 13:00 in OPD 1 (in collaboration with UNC, Lighthouse,
KCH clinicians)
Oncology /Hematology Clinic: Medical Specialist Clinic Tuesday, Thursday Ward 2 UNC room from 9:00 a.m (KCH/UNC).


Also there are clinic of partnering organizations you may attend (need to request first)

LIST OF ITEMS FOR VISITING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND CLINICIANS
Items you should bring as your personal medical equipment for your patient care and occupational safety. If you wish you may donate it
after use:
For students: White Lab coat or scrubs, non-slip shoeware
(this is what our Malawian Medical students and international students alike are expected to wear, please no “flip –flops”, shorts etc. You are a
guest in our dept., show your respect to the patients and colleagues by your attire, iron your shirts and trousers, have a clean labcoat., scrubs are
a very acceptable alternative).
The following items are useful for ward rounds (bring an appropriate bag or rucksack, there is no space to lock personal belongings):

HIV Postexposure Prophylaxis is available: This is DUOVIR; please inform yourself on your countries’ guidelines and bring a supply of this with
you. Make sure you are fully immunized against Hepatitis A and B, as well as rabies and yellow fever.
Malaria prophylaxis: Doxycycline is available. In case you want to use Mefloquine or Malarone you need to bring this from home (no secured
supply). Treatment with Lumefantrin/Arthemeter and Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests are available at low cost.
Praziquantel is available (Schistosomiasis). Overall local private pharmacies are well stocked for all eventualities.
Print the attached softcopies of the relevant National Malawi Treatment Guidelines (general guideline, TB, HIV, STD guideline) and textbooks
(Neurology in Africa, Clinical Handbook). Read them in advance. You may give the printed copy away to a staff member when you leave.

Also you need to report to the hospital administration when you start your rotation. An “attachment fee” may apply depending on the kind of your
attachment and your affiliation.
International students: Bring a form from your University that can be used for confirmation of your attachment.
If you wish you can use the College of Medicine for MBBS 3 Logbook to have your procedures documented. Send an e-mail to
