Sugar & Creamer Set
Using a template to create multiples / Variation on a form
For this project, you will create TWO separate pieces using ONE template to create a set. Artists utilize sets for
practical purposes (a set of plates for a dinner table), for practice (the more times you make something the better
you are at making it), and because sets are aesthetically pleasing. Your set will function as a sugar bowl and
creamer.
Pre-Project Planning:
-Sketch some (at least 3 different ideas) finished product ideas for you sugar bowl & creamer set (LABEL THESE IN YOUR
SKETCHBOOK). Make sure your creamer includes a spout and your sugar bowl includes a lid.
YOUR IDEAS SHOULD CONSIDER THE WHOLE FINISHED PRODUCT INCLUDING TEXTURE, DESIGN, ETC.
-Create a paper template for your product, first with graph paper, then out of heavier construction paper.
-YOUR SUGAR AND CREAMER MUST BE BETWEEN 3 ¼” X 3 ¼” and 5 ¼” x 5 ¼”
Product Construction:
-Work slowly! This will help prevent uneven walls and cracking of your clay.
-Make sure your template WORKS!
-Roll enough slab to cut your template from. (Roll slab to about ¼” thick)
-Smooth and compress your slab with a rib--NO AIR BUBBLES.
-Add texture to your slab if you want different parts to have texture.
-Carefully trace your template with a needle tool and then use an xacto knife to cut the edges.
-Bevel any edges that will attach together.
-Decide whether or not you want your seams to be visible and part of your design.
-REMEMBER TO SCORE AND SLIP!!
-Craftsmanship is paramount--work carefully and clean up seams, edges, texture, design; no sharp edges!
Adding any design elements or handles, lids, etc:
-Keep your work wrapped up tightly in plastic until you are done constructing.
-Decide what you need to make for add-ons to your template design (spout, handles, lid?).
-Do you want to add surface texture--reductive or additive?
Self Evaluation = Sugar & Creamer Set
1.) What is the most successful element of your finished product? WHY? (Your template design, your construction of the
objects in your set --consistency, the glaze design and application, etc.)
2.) What was the most challenging step in this process? Explain why this was challenging.
3.) Tell me about your sugar and creamer set. Describe the elements of your set--what SHAPES do you use, what
texture or patterns did you apply, how did you achieve consistency or contrast in your set? Does your glaze enhance
or detract from your idea/concept? How did you come up with your pattern or design concept, where did you find
inspiration or ideas?
4.) Draw thumbnail sketches of your two pieces. Label the glazes you used and the order of the layers. (Use arrows!)
