The students worked with the
contour lines of a topographic
map and a profile of the same
hill. They were to color the
elevation lines of the contour
topographic map and the
elevation sections of the profile
map to match. This enabled
students to better understand
how a profile and topographic
map can work together to
better understand landforms.
The students began the process
of drawing a 2x2" box in an area
of a topographic map. The
purpose of this assessment was
to get the students to take a
section of a map and create a
profile of that particular area.
This enables students to see how
they can address one area of a
map at a time, rather than being
overwhelmed by all of the
topographic contour lines.
Activities
Activities
1. The students colored the
elevation lines on a
topographic map and the
elevation increments of a
profile of the same landform.
1. The students were required to
choose a 2 square inch section of
a topographic map to then create
a larger version and then use this
to create a profile
Academic Vocabulary:
Topographic Map, Contour Lines,
elevation increments, vertical,
horizontal, and diagonal lines
Academic Vocabulary:
Topographic Map, Contour Lines,
elevation increments, vertical,
horizontal, and diagonal lines
Materials handout for students to
color, colored pencils, rulers,
promethean screen for larger
version of handout
Assessment: Completion of
coloring
Homework - None
Materials: Topographic map
handout for students to designate a
two square inch section, colored
pencils, rulers, promethean screen
for larger version of handout
Assessment Students will have
created the contour lines for
assignment and started Elevation
Lines for a mountain landform
Homework - None
Due Dates - None
Due Dates - None
The students were assessed on
their ability to draw the contour
lines of a specific landform from
the front board onto their paper,
define the elevation increments,
and then profile the landform in
order to make sure the landform
is a mountain.
Activities
1. Students will complete Activity
from Tuesday
2. Students will be given an
example of a topographic map
landform. Students will need to
create the profile. This
assignment is a bit more difficult
as there are two rises within the
landform, in which students will
need to express the difference in
elevation between the two
vertical differences
Academic Vocabulary:
Topographic Map, Contour Lines,
elevation increments, vertical,
horizontal, and diagonal lines
Materials: Topographic map
handout, colored pencils, rulers,
promethean screen for larger
version of handout; contour lines for
test, lined-paper
Assessment Elevation Test
Homework None
Due Dates - None
The students took a quiz, which
asked they match six contour
lines with their correct profile.
Activities
1.
Students were given six
different topographic contour
landscapes in which they
needed to match to their profile
2. Students viewed a short video
on using water to show contour
lines on a 3-D map
Academic Vocabulary:
Topographic Map, Contour Lines,
elevation increments, vertical,
horizontal, and diagonal lines
Materials – Promethean Board and
quiz for topographic contour line
matching with profiles

topographic contour lines with
their profile
