News Release 05.03.12 Gloucestershire Hospitals supports World Kidney Day The Nephrology Team at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital are running an information stand at the Outpatient Department with the Gloucestershire Kidney Patient Association (GKPA) to raise awareness for World Kidney Day on the 8th March. A joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF), the aim of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide. Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Renal Dietitian, Sally Pugh said: “We are supporting this event in order to generate greater awareness of the importance of kidney disease. Life changes such as regular exercise, stopping smoking, reducing salt intake and having a healthy diet are important factors in prevention and management of kidney disease. “We are also seeking to highlight that high blood pressure and diabetes are common risk factors for the development of kidney disease and we are keen to demonstrate how important an issue kidney disease is as a health issue to the general public”. Consultant Nephrologist Dr Preetham Boddana added: “If detected early, chronic kidney diseases can be treated, thereby reducing other complications and dramatically reduce the growing burden of deaths and disability from chronic renal and cardiovascular disease worldwide”.
