Notes for Applicants
Please read thoroughly the following notes and instructions before filling in the application.
1. Background
Global Scholar Program is a program run by Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA), a transnational partnership of 29
American style liberal arts institutions across different continents, starting from 2015/16. The purpose of this
program is to develop students’ global awareness and cross-cultural understanding through an individualized
sequence of study at the home institution and at two other Alliance institutions in different world regions for one
semester each. It is also an academic program through which a student completes a significant focused
investigation of a topic that is transnational in scope. The “Global Scholar Program Scholarships” of a total value
ranging from HK$28,000 to HK$66,000 (depends on the destinations and students’ financial needs) will be offered
to each awardee. Besides, the two Global Scholars will also enjoy two free economy return air tickets. Please
note that the awardees will not be entitled to other student exchange scholarship and financial aid.
2. Eligibility
Second year students of the 4-year programme who meet the requirements as stipulated below:



Outstanding cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above as of Term 1, 2015/16;
an IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (academic module); OR a TOEFL score of 232
(computer-based test) or 90-91 (internet-based test); and
Possess excellent communication skills, civic mindedness, and strong leadership potential.

5. Exchange Periods
You are required to consult your academic advisor to choose 2 semesters abroad out of the 3 recommended
semesters that best suit your study plan. Below are the options available:
1st semester + 2nd semester of Year 3; OR
1st semester of Year 3 + 1st semester of Year 4; OR
2nd semester of Year 3 + 1st semester of Year 4
6. Prioritized List of Study Locations and Courses
You are required to consult your academic advisor to come up with a prioritized list of study locations and courses
(Appendix A). You are required to prioritize at least 4 alliance institutions which are located in 2 different world
regions and provide your proposed courses of study for the 4 selected institutions. Please provide at least 3
proposed courses bearing workload equivalent to a minimum of 12 Lingnan credits for each of the alliance
institution. Please note that the prioritized list of study locations and courses are tentative. The final study plans
will be subject to the approval of the respective Programme Directors/ UG Director (for Arts students), GLAA as
well as the alliance institutions.
7. Reference from a Faculty Member
You are required to obtain one reference from a faculty member to support your application. Your referee (can be
from any academic units) should have taught you for at least 1 course and he/she should be able to comment on
your academic performance, generic skills and suitability for the Global Scholar Program. You are also
encouraged to approach a referee as soon as possible before the deadline so as to allow ample time for him/her
to complete the reference form (Appendix B).
8. Selection Process
The Global Scholars will be chosen by a Selection Committee chaired by the President, with the membership
including the AVP (Academic Quality Assurance and Internationalisation), and one representative from each of
the Arts, Business and Social Sciences Faculties nominated by the Deans concerned. The selected Global
Scholars will then submit an application to GLAA which will allocate the final host institutions.
9. Application Timeline

10. Obligations
The selected Global Scholars are required:
 To meet with the expectation of the University, the host institutions and GLAA before, during and after the
Global Scholar Program.
 To submit an interim report (after the 1st semester abroad) describing the state of the proposed project,
insights gained, and thoughts on how the project may have changed and the impact that will have on the
second phase of the investigation.
 To submit a final report (after the 2nd semester abroad) in two parts. The first part is an analytical piece
that describes the global issue’s origin, its impact, how it has been addressed, and provides an analysis
of future implications and how the issue might be addressed using theoretical approaches from one or
more disciplines. The second part of the report is a reflective piece on the Global Scholar’s experience
living in three world regions, and a personal perspective on the global issue and what impact the Global
Scholar experience has had on the student’s future plans. The final report will be reviewed by the
respective Programme Directors/ UG Director (for Arts students) and the GLAA.
 To act as a goodwill ambassador for Lingnan University and Hong Kong while study abroad.
 To return to Lingnan University after the study abroad semesters to complete your degree in Hong Kong.
 To remain active in the community of Global Scholars after graduation and provide mentorship to rising
Scholars.
Please note that the selected students for the program, who do not comply with the above requirements, should
reimburse the full cost of scholarship and sponsorship to the University.
