2014-2015 FACULTY SCHOLAR GRANT
Application Guidelines
The Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) is pleased to announce the 2014-2015 Faculty
Scholar Grant. The purpose of the Grant is to encourage high quality, multidisciplinary, policy-relevant work on race
and ethnicity across the UIC campus. Scholar Grants are designed to support project costs and research expenses.
DEADLINE: October 25, 2013. Applications are accepted until 5 p.m.
ELIGIBILITY
The Grant competition is open to all full-time clinical, research, tenured, and tenure-track faculty at UIC, regardless
of how recently they have received IRRPP funding. Junior faculty and those from underrepresented racial/ethnic
groups are especially encouraged to apply. Faculty members may apply for both the Faculty Scholar Grant and the
Faculty Fellowship simultaneously.
AWARD AMOUNT: Up to $5,000.00 per year for individuals and up to $10,000.00 per year for teams.
GRANT TERMS
The term of the Scholar Grant is July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. Faculty Scholars are expected to:
1. Support IRRPP programs by attending events, presenting research, contributing publications to the website,
or serving on committees (e.g. funding selection or professional development committees).
2. Acknowledge IRRPP funding on all publications and presentations.
3. Submit a working paper for posting on the IRRPP website by the end of the funding period (June 30, 2015).
4. Submit a project report summarizing the project status and its findings by the end of the funding period (June
30, 2015).
APPLICATION GUIDELINES:
Complete applications are reviewed by a committee of IRRPP staff and UIC faculty and include:
1. A completed cover sheet, including all necessary signatures;
2. An abstract that summarizes the project;
3. A 2-3 page, single-spaced summary of research activity that describes:
a. The purpose and nature of the activity, including the specific tasks to be conducted and why, their
relationship to the larger project, and the location and timeline for their completion.
b. The research design, including data collection method with instruments, recruitment strategies,
sampling criteria, data analysis method, and up to 2 pages for appendices with references, tables,
and figures. If the proposed scholarly activity is not a research study, include details sufficient to
permit reviewers to understand the purpose of the project and how it will be implemented.
Collaborative proposals must clearly identify the role of each faculty member.
c. The policy relevance of the project. IRRPP considers projects to be policy-relevant if they can be
used to inform a particular policy audience and influence the various stages of the policy process
including public debates on policy issues, policy-related political mobilizations, policy formation and
implementation processes, and policy evaluations.
d. The project’s contribution to applicants’ professional progress or prospects for external funding.
e. The applicant’s substantive and methodological expertise (senior faculty) or mentoring plan (junior
faculty). Mentoring plans should include the name and expertise of the mentor(s), the type of
mentoring expected to take place, and a description of the mentoring activities, such as a meeting
schedule and the purpose of the planned meetings.
4. A 1-2 page budget and budget narrative that details additional funding sources, and the specific budget
items to be covered by the grant.
5. A 2-page, abbreviated curriculum vitae;
6. A 1-page biography describing the relevant publication and funding record of the applicant and mentor (if
applicable).
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Applicants should submit a single pdf document that includes all the materials to the IRRPP Office Manager
Ryan Viloria, at rvilor1@uic.edu. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Applications are accepted until
5 p.m. on the due date.
