Calendar
The spring session begins the week of February 2, 2015. Evening classes will not be in session
when school is closed for a holiday or a snow day.
Scheduled holidays for the semester are: February 16 – February 20: Mid- Winter Recess,
April 3: Good Friday Observance, April 6 – April 10: Spring Recess and May 25: Memorial
Day.
School Closing: If it should be necessary to close because of inclement weather, the
announcement will be made over WBEN and WGR radio stations.
You will not be notified individually if school is unexpectedly closed.
Register by completing the form on the last page of this booklet. Register by mail or in person at
the High School Office, Monday – Friday, 7:30 – 3:00 PM. If registering by mail, please enclose a
check or money order with your completed registration form. Please write a separate check for
each course. Registration forms may be duplicated. Make checks payable to Alden
Community Education.

Evening walk-in registration will be held on Wednesday, January 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM in
the High School (near the front entrance).
If registering in person, course fees must be paid at that time. You may pay by cash, check or
money order. If paying by check, please write a separate check for each course. Sorry, no
telephone registration will be accepted. We do not accept credit cards.
Course cancellations: A minimum number of students will be required for each class. If your
course is canceled due to insufficient registration, you will receive notification (and your check) by
mail. If you have registered for a course, please report to the course as scheduled.
No notification of confirmation will be sent. You will not be called unless your course is
canceled or to advise you of any changes. You may call the office if you wish to confirm your
registration.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS ONE WEEK PRIOR TO CLASS START DATE!
Withdrawals/Refunds: No fees will be refunded for any reason, unless a course is
canceled.
Materials: Students are responsible for the cost of materials where they are required.
Lab/material fees are payable to the instructor on the first night of the course. Please do not
enclose material fee with your registration.

We are pleased to offer the following trips and tours with Know How Tours. Plan
a fun outing with family or friends and leave all the arrangements to us! Just
show up, ready for adventure and enjoy the day! All trips that include show
tickets are assured good seating. You will receive confirmation of your trip

Market at 355 Orchard Park Rd. next to Kmart in West Seneca (TP). Please
note the trip you are registering for on the “course selection” portion of the

announce a new partnership with the Eastern Hills Mall, 4545 Transit Road,
Williamsville 14221. Please park in the rear of the mall lot behind Sears. This
location will replace the previous Home Depot pick up. This is a safe, easy to

We’re off to The Station Dinner Theater in Erie, PA for the show, “Murder Among Friends!” A funfilled murder comedy. Take an aging, exceedingly vain actor; his very rich wife; a double dealing,
double loving agent; plunk them down in an elegant New York duplex and add dialogue cracking
with wit and laughs and what do you have? The basic elements for an evening of pure,
sophisticated entertainment. A murder occurs, but not one of the planned ones. Dinner Show
includes family style meal. Enroute to Erie, we will stop at Northeast, PA for a visit to Arrowhead
Winery for a tour and tasting. Cash bar and soft drinks available for purchase at dinner theater.

Enjoy the 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show. The show is the world’s biggest, oldest indoor flower
show and marking its 186th year with a Hollywood movie theme. Itinerary: Day 1 – depart for
Philadelphia, PA. Visit the National Constitution center, America’s most interactive history
museum. Check into our hotel before departing for dinner tonight at a local restaurant followed
by an evening with a Founding Father. Day 2 – After a Continental breakfast we meet our guide
for a 3-hour historic tour of Philadelphia. Founded and layed out by William Penn, the city was
the second largest, but most prominent of the early English colonies. Next enjoy the 2015
Philadelphia Flower Show. Time at leisure for lunch on your own at Reading Terminal Market
located across from the Flower Show. Tonight, spend the evening at a Philadelphia Casino.
Dinner on your own at the casino. Day 3 – continental breakfast, check out of hotel and depart
for Independence National Historic Park, spanning over 55 acres and 20 city blocks within the
historic district of Philadelphia. You are welcome to visit Independence Hall, Old city Hall,

HAIR – THE MUSICAL

Let the sun shine in! We’re traveling to SUNY Fredonia’s King Concert Hall for an afternoon
matinee Hair, The Musical. Dig out those tie dyed shirts, bell bottoms and “Let the Sun Shine In.”
Originally opened on Broadway in 1968, Hair has played all over the world and won Best Musical
Revival in 2009. The musical that introduced rock ‘n’ roll to the theatrical stage, Hair tells the
story of the “tribe” a group of 60’s-era youth struggling for generational and personal identity.
They are politically active, long haired hippies from the “Age of Aquarius: living in New York City.
They protested all things they saw wrong with America – racism, environmental destruction,
poverty, violence at home and Vietnam War. Contrary to popular belief, the “hippies” had great
respect for America and believed they were true patriots, the only ones who genuinely wanted to
save our country and make it the best it could be once again. Hear great tunes like,
“Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In,” “Hair,” “Good Morning Starshine” and many more! A sit down
lunch begins this show tour at the White Inn.

Canada Blooms: Admission to The Canada Blooms Toronto Flower & Garden Show at
Exhibition Place – among the top 5 in the world, and the largest in Canada. This year’s theme is
“Let’s Play.” You will have approximately 5 hours to explore the six acres of gardens that feature
amateur and professional competitions, informative lectures and demonstrations. 200 garden
retailers will be in the adjacent marketplace. Food is available on-site, or bring your own, or go
outside to one of the nearby restaurants. Plants with proper documentation may be purchased
and brought into the states.
Do Your Own Thing: Take in a show, visit a museum, shop or visit with friends in this fantastic
city. You will be dropped off at the Eaton Center and have from 11:00 – 4:00 to explore!

Travel to Washington, DC with 2 rest stops. Arrive and depart from Union station and “Do Your
Own Thing” until 8:00pm, To make the best of your time, each person will receive a map and
some information with ideas on what to do in Washington a few weeks before departure. We will
depart Friday night spend 12 hours Saturday and return early Sunday morning.

Cost: $99.00 per person
Travel to the Big Apple with 2 rest/food stops. Arrive in Midtown Manhattan (Rockefeller Center)
at approximately 8:00 am Saturday and have free time until 8:00 pm (Columbus Circle pick up).
Each person will receive pamphlets, a map and other info a few weeks before departure. We
advise waiting to purchase any theater tickets until 1 month prior to departure. The trip includes a
tour escort, deluxe motor coach, discount coupons, and maps and information to help you plan.
Full payment is due with registration and includes a $25.00 non-refundable cancellation fee. NO
REFUND will be given 30 days prior to departure unless a replacement is found. If this happens,
a full refund minus the $25.00 p/p cancellation fee will be given.

Sewing is easy! You will create a beautiful table runner, pillowcase or bag, depending on skill
level. You will choose your project before class begins. Please call (616-9310) or stop by for a
materials list. You will need to bring your sewing machine. (I have one machine available –
reserve early!) For ages 16 & up. The materials fee for this class is $5.00 payable to

theme or holiday, etc. Bring any scrapbook items you have bought and wondered “Now what do I
do?” when you got home. We will cover design, placement, and color and use some fun, new
tools! You will learn to use a Cricut Machine, paper punches, Spellbinder and other dies. There
is a $12.00 materials fee for this class payable to the instructor class night.

Come and learn the beauty of copper enameling. Enameling seems very close to magic, but the
basic technique is simple, powdered glass is sifted onto a piece of copper, melted for a few
moments in a small kiln and cooled, it then glows with permanent color. The colors produced can
be vivid or subtle, plain or shaded, light or dark - just as you choose. You can make enameled

necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing, cardiac emergencies, injuries and

over one 3 hour training session. Students who complete the program will receive a text and 2

perfect clean, dry and safe setting, regardless of the weather! Pick up your walking pass at the
high school office between 7:30 – 3:30. Open to Alden residents only. No children please. Note:
Access may be restricted due to scheduled events or maintenance issues.

permit. Students MUST be on time or will not be allowed to enter the class!

This course, sponsored by the National Traffic Safety Institute, will reduce primary operator’s auto
liability and collision insurance 10% per year and will reduce up to 4 points from a driving record.
By taking the course, drivers with excessive points can avoid possible revocation or suspension
of their license; however, the course will not override a mandatory suspension or revocation (e.g.
3 speeding tickets in 18 months). All drivers are eligible. Please bring driver’s license or valid

Donald Howe, licensed driving instructor, is offering private driving lessons. Students must
provide vehicle with current registration, inspection and F.S. 20 (insurance card). Lessons are
given in two-hour blocks at $40.00 per hour at your convenience. Evenings and weekends are

SWIMMING CLASSES
SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY CLASSES
All swimming courses will be taught and supervised in conjunction with the Swimming and Water
Safety courses of the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross offers comprehensive,
developmentally appropriate Swimming and Water Safety courses that teach you, your child or
other family members how to swim skillfully and safely, and think and act safely in, on and around
the water. The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills from the
preceding level, except for Level 1, which has no prerequisites. Pool rules must be obeyed by all
participants to insure swimmer safety. No running on deck, no gum, no jewelry. Pool personnel
not responsible for lost items. Swimmers of all ages use the pool and the locker rooms – please
be respectful of each other. The Director of the Aquatics program, Pamela Turton, is a Certified
Lifeguard Water Safety Instructor and is assisted by trained Lifeguard Assistants. For all swim
classes, please park in the parking lot in the rear of the building and enter through the northwest
door by the Maintenance building or through the main front entrance. Classes are held at the
High School pool. Parents are welcome to hall walk during swim lessons.
Important! Please register at least 2 weeks in advance for
Swim lessons so that each level can be properly staffed.
Locker Room Rules: There are to be NO women or girls over toddler age in the men’s
locker room! There are to be NO men or boys over toddler age in the women’s locker
room! If your child needs assistance, please ask a Lifeguard. Other areas are available for
changing if needed. Thank you for your cooperation.
Parent and Child Aquatics – (8 months to about 3 years)

An adult is required to accompany each child in the water and participate in every class. You and
your child will learn to feel comfortable in the water, submerge and explore breath control, explore
floating on the back and front, change body position in the water, and play safely in the water and
experience wearing a life jacket. Important – When children can perform basic skills without
parental assistance, they may begin Learn-to-Swim. Times, days, location and fee remain the
same. Flotation devices may be used (no arm “floaties.”) Floatation back bubbles for Parent/child
class may be ordered with registration, if desired. If you would like to order the bubble, please
make a note on the registration form and include the $12.00 cost with your registration fee.
Preschool Aquatics (about 4 – 5 years)

Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. Enter water
using ladder, steps or side, up to jumping in, blow bubbles, submerge mouth, nose and eyes,
open eyes and retrieve submerged objects, front and back glides, roll from front to back and back
to front, alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action on front and back, combined arm and
leg action, bobbing, treading, finning, age appropriate water safety topics. Children swim with
instructors (no parents). Flotation devices may be used (no arm “floaties”). Progressive layered
back bubbles work best and can be ordered with registration, if desired. If you would like to order
the bubble, please make a note on the registration form and include the $12.00 cost with your
registration fee.
Lap Swim
Tuesday,March 17 – May 12, 6:30 – 7:30 (lengths) and/or Thursday, March 19 – May 14,
7:30 – 8:30 (widths, deep end) (no class 4/7 & 4/9)
Fee: $40.00 for one night or $76.00 for both nights.
Noncompetitive. Set personal goals and swim as many laps as you can to improve fitness level.
72 widths = ½ mile, 72 lengths = 1 mile. If you are signing up for just one night, please
indicate that night on registration form.
Swim Lessons for Children Levels 1 - 4

appropriate level. Changes may be made first class, if deemed necessary by Mrs. Turton.
Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills:
In this level your child is introduced to basic skills as the foundation for future skills. Certain
milestones are necessary for successful completion of level 1, including: entering the water
independently using ladder, steps or side., traveling at least 5 yards, bobbing 3 times then safely
exiting the water, gliding on front supported at least 2 body lengths, rolling to a back float for 3
seconds with support, and recovering to a vertical position with support. Instructors follow a plan
that details the skills to be introduced at each level along with performance expectations.
Progress of participants is continuously monitored and evaluated and skills are checked off as
they are achieved. Once all Level 1 skills are achieved, participants receive a completion
certificate and they are ready to move on to level 2!
Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills:
Level 2 builds on skills learned in Level 1. Our instructors follow a plan to introduce new
swimming and water safety skills and build on previously learned skills. Each class is loaded with
fun, engaging and challenging activities that motivate children to want to perform and learn to
swim. Some of the milestones that are necessary for successful completion of Level 2 include:
Stepping from the side into chest-deep water, moving into a front float for 5 seconds, rolling to
back, floating for 5 seconds then recovering to a vertical position, moving into a back float for 5
seconds, rolling to front then recovering to a vertical position, pushing off and swimming using
combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, rolling to back, floating for 15 seconds,
rolling to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Once all Level 2 skills are
achieved, participants receive a completion certificate and they are ready to move on to Level 3!
Level 3 – Stroke Development
After successfully demonstrating the completion requirements from Level 2, enroll your child in
Learn-to-Swim level3. In Level 3 your child will learn the: survival float, front crawl, elementary
backstroke, scissors and dolphin kicks, fundamentals of treading water, safety rules for headfirst
entries, early progressions for entering the water headfirst from the side of the pool. Milestones
for this level include: jumping into deep water from the side, swimming the front crawl for 15
yards, maintaining position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swimming the elementary
backstroke for 15 yards.
Level 4 – Stroke Improvement
After successfully completing Level 3, be sure to register your child for Learn-to-Swim Level 4. In
Level 4 participants: increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl,
elementary backstroke) for greater distances, build on the scissors kick and dolphin kick by
adding arms for sidestroke and butterfly, learn the back crawl, learn the breaststroke, and learn
the basics of turning at a wall. Milestones in the level include: swimming the front crawl for 25
yards, swimming the backstroke for 25 yards, swimming the breaststroke for 15 yards, swimming
the back crawl for 15 yards and open turns on the front and back.
Swimming Lessons for Children – Levels 5 & 6

Level 5 – Stroke Refinement
In Level 5 participants will: refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl,
butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke, increase their endurance by
swimming familiar strokes for greater distances, learn flip turns on the front and back. Some of
the milestones in level 5 include: performing a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swimming the
front crawl for 50 yards, swimming the elementary backstroke for 50 yards, swimming the
breaststroke for 25 yards, and swimming the back crawl for 25 yards.
Level 6 – Swimming and Skill Proficiency:
In level 6 you: continue to improve the quality and endurance of all six strokes learned throughout
the six levels of Learn-to-Swim, prepare for more advanced courses like Lifeguarding and Water
Safety Instructor, and learn some basics of specialized aquatic activities, such as competitive
swimming or diving. Some of the milestones include: swimming 500 yards continuously using
any 3 strokes of choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke, performing a two-part takeoff
with a feet first entry form a 1-meter diving board and performing a two-part takeoff with a
headfirst entry from a 1-meter diving board.
Diving Lessons

For beginners and more advanced divers. Instructor will teach those working to improve beginner
dives from pool deck with progressions to basic board dives to more advanced dives depending
on diver’s skill, abilities and interests.
Hydro Aerobics
Tuesday and/or Thursday, March 17 – May 14, 7:30 – 8:30 (8 weeks, no class 4/7 & 4/9)
Fee: $40.00/1 night, $76.00/2 nights.
This is a low impact exercise routine in the pool set to music. In aquatic exercise you walk, jog
and dance in shallow water or run in deep water. The benefits include cardiovascular endurance,
muscular strength, flexibility and weight management. You will feel absolutely terrific and your
body will thank you! Water shoes recommended, 1 or 2 lb. hand weights optional, dynabands
provided. A minimum of 6 participants each night is necessary to run the class.
LIFEGUARD TRAINING
Thursday, March 19 – May 14 (8 classes, no class 4/9) 5:30 – 9:00
This comprehensive American Red Cross Lifeguarding course prepares participants for
employment as lifeguards. Updated to meet Emergency Cardiovascular Care 2000 guidelines,
key features of this course include: CPR and First Aid skills and information in the video
presented in an aquatic setting, skills-based scenarios and decision-making, consolidated
participant’s manual containing course information for Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for
the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Essentials, Oxygen
Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission. Certifications include: CPR for the
Professional Rescuer (1 year), Lifeguard Training First Aid (3 years). This class is limited to 12
students. The fee includes the manual, rescue mask and certification card. Students must be at
least 15 years old and must pass a pre-test. You will be notified of date and time of pretest upon
