Information Sheet What is archaeology? Archaeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artefacts. Is it a primary source or a secondary source? Primary Source: A primary source is something straight from history like a diary, artefact, or relic. Secondary Source: A secondary source is information about the primary source like a magazine article on the source, a historical textbook and a newspaper article. How would you find out whether it is primary or secondary? Ask yourself these questions. Who created the source? Is it real? Is it an artefact or information on the artefact? Is it a diary entry or speech? Is it information or pictures? Is it artwork? Is it plastic? Is it stone?
