Introductory Statement
Larry Lai Jin Yang was a student of Chung Cheng High School (Main) from 2011 to 2014.
Intellectual Independence and Passion for Learning
Larry is effectively bilingual in English and Chinese. His proficiency in the Chinese
Language is evident from his distinction attained in the 2013 GCE O-level Chinese
Examination and his consistently exemplary results in the subject throughout his four years of
education in the school. In 201?, he was chosen by his Chinese teacher to take part in a
Chongqing and Suzhou Exchange Programme where he had the opportunity to interact with
people of China to understand more about their culture and lifestyles. During the exchange
programme, he was appointed as the leader of small groups and he demonstrated his
commitment to his role by ensuring that the assigned tasks were completed on promptly. He
also participated in the SAP (full name required) School Seminar 2013 organised by Nanyang
Girls High School where he had the opportunity to explore about the co-existence of the
Western culture and the Eastern culture. In addition, he was also involved in the Chinese
Talent Development Programme where he built up his passion for learning as a bicultural
student through talent development opportunities and specialized programmes provided by
the school.
As a debater in the 2013 Chung Cheng High Inter-Class Debate Festival, Larry displayed his
dexterity in the English Language by putting it across to good use and he was able to present
his views in a lucid and cogent manner. At the same time, Larry possesses a keen interest in
Mathematics, He partook in the New South Wales Mathematics Competition and attained
Credit.
Demonstrating a strong desire to excel, Larry would take the initiative to clarify doubts with
teachers and often participate enthusiastically in class discussions, offering insightful and
perceptive responses, which displays a depth of understanding and his interest to learn. He
has a positive attitude towards studies and would often approach teachers after lessons to
clarify doubts. He is punctual in the submission of his assignments of all subjects and takes
pride in producing high quality work all the time. This is a testimony of his self-discipline
and motivation to excel.
Interpersonal Skills
As seen from his achievements in Co-Curricular Activities, Larry was able to balance studies
with his active involvement in the Student Councillor, in which his leadership skills were
clearly displayed. He was able to relate well with juniors and peers, and his communication
skills enabled him to develop a good relationship with them. As such, he was elected to be
the Human Resource Head, part of the ‘Top 6’ of the Student Council. He exhibited good
leadership skills by ensuring that his junior Student Councillors were able to keep up their
duty standard and provided them with tutelage and assistance, especially during school event
planning such as Speech Day and Parents-Teacher conference. He proactively offered
constructive views for the school from the view of an Executive Committee member in the
Students' Council.
Through participating actively in pro bono works and community involvement programme,
Larry demonstrated consideration and empathy for others. He energetically volunteered in
‘Project Sunshine’, a community project for helping needy pupils in Redhill-Queenstown
District where he tutored underprivileged children who were academically weak. He also
planned appropriate games for the children and made a point to assess the attention span of
the children. This shows that he understood the responsibilities of being a member of the
community by providing a helping hand to those in need. Furthermore, he also participated in
the 7th Student Leadership Congress organised by Temasek Junior College where he fostered
relationships between people from different socio- cultural and religious background.
Personal Attributes
Larry is helpful, respectful and friendly to his teachers and peers. He is mature when handling
complex issues. A team player, he values and encourages cooperation and collaboration
among teammates. With his cheerful disposition and optimism, he does not allow himself to
be discouraged by setbacks. Instead, he strives to surmount difficulties and obstacles.
Dependable, he can be trusted to make sound decision even under pressure. In view of his
high moral character, Larry was awarded the ‘MOE Edusave Character Award’ in 201X?
