ELKS NATIONAL HOOP SHOOT FREE THROW CONTEST
The Elks National “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest is open to all boys and girls, ages 8 to 13
years old. It is free to all students and winners can advance through the school, Lodge, District,
State and Regional contests to reach the National Contest. Age is determined by how old you
will be on April 1st, 2016. So if you are 9 years old during the school competition, but will be
10 on or before April 1st (date of the National contest), you will need to shoot as a 10 year old
during the school competition. Winners who move onto the next competition must show a
birth certificate to continue. This year’s school contest, open to Hayden Meadow Students only,
will be Wednesday November 18th afterschool from 3:45-4:45pm in the Hayden Meadows
Gym. Students who wish to compete will sign up in the gym afterschool on November 18th.
Each child will be given 10 free throw attempts. If they make 3 or more baskets in those 10
attempts, they will be given 15 more attempts for a total of 25 free throw attempts. The
winner will be determined by who makes the most baskets. There are three age brackets: 8-9
yrs. Old (who shoot from 11’ from the basket) and 10-11 yrs. Old (who shoot from the regular
15’ free throw line), and if applicable 12-13 yrs. Old. There will be a boy and girl winner
from each age category. The winners will then compete in the local Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot
contest in Post Falls on January 10th, 2016. Winners of each contest will continue onto the next
competition. The Elks Club pays for any travel expenses for one parent and the student
starting if a child qualifies for the state competition.
Students may leave the school competition as soon as they have completed their chance to
shoot. If we have a tie in the first 2 places we will have a shootout either that day or another
day soon after the contest to determine the winner of the tie. Students will need to arrange a
ride home after they shoot on Wednesday Nov. 18th. Usually we are finished before the hour,
so it is best if you plan to pick your child up by 4:15 pm. Winners will be announced the next
day. If your child absolutely cannot stay afterschool on Nov. 18th, you may call or email Ms.
Johnson to make arrangements for your child to compete BEFORE the Nov. 18th contest. There
will not be a chance to shoot after the contest.
