My Journey… Brief FSTU 3501/3502/3602 Lecturers : (Visual Diary & Portfolio) 4 weeks (Semester 2, 2015) Annemarie Meijnen, Michael Freeman You will create an original illustrated story (black & white or grey scale) based on a real or imagined journey. You will be encouraged to explore different drawing styles and story ideas before deciding your own illustrated story. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your creative abilities and 2D visual skills (drawing, graphics, photography, illustration, cartoon, etc.) Bridgepoint/ Foundation Studies: Creative Arts/ Art and Design Page 1 Work Schedule Week 5 Introduction, Research, and Storyboarding Introduction of the ‘My Journey’ brief Firstly decide on the journey that will be the basis for your story – real or imaginery? (For example: My Journey to Unitec / My Journey to the Moon / My Journey to the Zoo / My Journey to Christchurch / My Journey back in Time / My Journey to Work.… etc Research For your research collect as many different examples of illustrations and drawing techniques that inspire you (in your visual diary / and pinterest) : Illustrations (photos, internet pictures/images, drawings, etc.) Drawings styles/techniques Storyboards Graphic novels, comic books, cartoon techniques, characters, etc. Storyboarding (developing your ideas) Use a ‘storyboarding’ template to explore and develop your own story. Your illustrated story must be a minimum of 8 frames. Record initial ideas/thoughts for the beginning, middle, and end of your journey Use your own photographs – of settings, backgrounds, characters, scenes, etc. Collect visual images – magazines, books, newspapers, internet, etc. Bridgepoint/ Foundation Studies: Creative Arts/ Art and Design Page 2 Week 6 Experimentation – Different drawing styles/techniques Select one of the plates from your story and experiment with two or three different drawing styles/techniques. Experiment and explore: Try experimenting with different drawing materials: pencil, pen, ink, markers, paint, watercolour, collage, Photoshop, InDesign and different papers (show examples of at least 3x different drawing material experiments) Explore different graphic techniques of line, cross hatching, shading and tone Also consider: Composition, perspective, 2D and/or 3D, depth & point of view. Where is the observer (or camera) in a particular image? Character/s (expressions/mood/how do they look?) Setting/s (background/environment) Is there any text? (If using text, consider text, fonts, and lettering composition) Week 7 & 8 Final Artwork and Presentation In week 7 you will finalise your illustrated story and review this with your peers and tutors. In week 8 you will create the final artwork which will be presented at the end of this week. NOTE : Once you have completed a piece of final artwork that is – black & white or grey scale, you might also explore doing a coloured version as an optional extra. Deliverables: Research (in visual diary/pinterest) including – examples of illustrations and drawing techniques you have collected, photographs, sketches, and other visual material – plus notes of your own thoughts and observations Photographs recording your process (in visual diary) Draft storyboard/s (lots of visuals/drawings and written notes of initial concepts) At least 3x different drawing styles/techniques – using a selected piece from your story Final storyboard artwork (minimum of 8 frames) (black & white or grey scale) Optional – a coloured piece of final artwork Assessment All work to be submitted for formative assessment at the end of week 8 All work to be submitted for summative assessment by week 15. NOTE: Before “Portfolio” submission: Ensure that all of your visual material and final artwork are kept in a protective box (to be included in your Portfolio). This will be summatively assessed as part of your Visual Diary & Portfolio mark. It is an assignment in research, design, planning, measuring, construction and drawing.
