The annual APS Back to School Kick-off for the 2015-16 school year will be held Saturday, August 8,
2015, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. This event has become a tradition in APS and is a chance for students,
families, community members and APS staff to come together to celebrate the new school year. We are
pleased to announce that Town Center at Aurora (the Aurora Mall) will be hosting the event. Free
backpack with supplies for those in attendance!
Beginning of the year and basic procedures questions/answers:
What time does school start?
 Line-up: 7:40 (supervision present)
 1st Bell: 7:55 (doors closed after last student enters building. Please report to the main office if
your child arrives after doors are closed)
 2nd Bell: 8:00 (students marked tardy if not in room by 8:00)
 Dismissal: 2:30 (students exit same door as line-up)
Does Laredo have a school uniform this year? No, Laredo’s dress policy will not include formal
uniforms for this school year.
When is Back to School Night at Laredo? The Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday,
August 12 from 4-6 p.m. This will be a night to meet your child’s teacher and hear about plans for the
upcoming year from the principal.
What can I tell my child about the Kindergarten screening? During the screening, new kindergartners
will do a variety of fun activities with a teacher. The activities informally assess literacy and numeracy
during the time. By experiencing school in this setting, our new students will get an opportunity to feel
comfortable with their surroundings before whole day kindergarten begins. Class lists will be created after
all children have visited with the kindergarten teachers. Parents will be notified who their child’s teacher is
on the first day of school.
Do I need to fill out any paperwork before school starts? You will receive a packet of information and
paperwork on the first day of school. Please read through all the information and return any applicable
pages.
Do you have a before and after school child care provider? We do not have child care available
before or after school at Laredo.
What time can students be dropped off? Playground supervision begins at 7:40 am.
What is the procedure if my child arrives after the final bell rings?
Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. need to enter through the main entrance to receive a tardy pass prior to
going to class.
Can students enter the building through the main entrance before 8:00 a.m.? All students need to
report directly to their line-up spot without entering the front doors between 7:40 and 8:00. Breakfast is
served in the classroom after the 1st bell. Visitors to the school must enter through the main entrance and
sign in at the main office.
Does APS provide school bus service to Laredo? The APS Transportation Department picks up
students from 1 stop. Students who do not reside within the 1 stop attendance boundary line may not
ride the school bus.
Why do all parents need to show a photo ID at the main office? You know me! In an effort to
consistently follow procedures established by the APS Security Department, all visitors who choose to
enter the school during school hours must show a photo ID. Visitors to the school will present a photo ID,
sign in, be issued an APS Visitor’s badge at the office window in the main office and then proceed directly
to their destination. At Laredo, we ask the visitor to exchange their driver’s license for an ID badge. This
ensures all visitors will return the badge to the office and sign out. If parents are frequent volunteers at
Laredo, a photo volunteer badge is available from the APS Security office. Badge request forms are
available in the main office starting the second week of August. Request forms are approved, signed and
submitted to the Security office by the principal. The volunteer needs to visit the Security Office after a 24
hour wait period to complete the process. The APS volunteer ID badge is good for one school year.
What is the procedure if I need to pick up my child during the school day? Parents and guardians
who pick up students early will need to present a photo ID and sign the student out from the nurse’s
office. Office staff will call the classroom and have the student meet parents in the front office.
If I am late when school or clubs dismiss, where can I find my child when I arrive? Because we do
not have supervision available, students who are not picked up by 2:45 or club dismissal time will call
their parents. Students are not allowed to wait unsupervised for transportation.
How do I pay for hot lunch? Lunches must be paid for in the office by cash or check during office hours.
The cafeteria staff will be available during Back to School Night to answer questions, accept payments,
and provide information about the Free/Reduced lunch program.
Do I need to purchase School Supplies? School Supply Lists are available in the office and on our
website. If there is an inability to provide school supplies due to financial concerns, please contact Mayra
Duran at mpduran-espinosa@aps.k12.co.us. All requests for assistance will be confidential.
How do I sign my child up for a club? Clubs usually begin to form in mid-August. Watch for fliers in
Friday Folders or ask your child to listen for intercom announcements made by club sponsors. Most clubs
begin meeting after Labor Day.
How do I notify the school if my child is absent? Please call Laredo at 303-366-0314 and ask for
attendance to report an absence. The attendance line is available 24 hours a day.
Can I speak with the nurse about my student’s medical needs? You are welcome to call the school
nurse directly at 303-326-1537 between 7:15 am and 3:15 pm or leave a message any other time.
What are the office hours?
7:30 – 3:45 Monday - Friday
How can I get involved in school activities? Laredo encourages parents and guardians to actively
participate in their children’s education. The PTA will host an informational volunteer night in September.
