Synopsis:
Climatic change is expected to significantly modify numerous aspects of weather as we
know it today, with a probable rise in atmospheric temperatures, seasonal and geographic
changes in precipitation patterns, and an expected increase in extreme events. The rate of
climatic change projected for the coming decades of the 21st century will be extremely
rapid by comparison with natural climate variations, so that many environmental and socioeconomic systems will be vulnerable to the impacts of rapid climate change. Particular
sectors that can expect to be influenced by shifts in climate regimes include water,
vegetation, sea-level, health, and trade. This talk will therefore review climatic change and
its impacts from the global scale - in order to highlight the fact that processes and
disruptions occurring in one part of the world are capable of influencing regional climates in
other parts of the world - down to the scales of SE Asia.
About the Speaker
Martin Beniston is Professor, Chair for Climate Research and
Director of the Institute for Environmental Sciences (ISE) at the
University of Geneva, Switzerland, since October 2006. In 2008, he
initiated and became the coordinator of a major European project
within the 7th R&D Framework Programme FP7, the “ACQWA”
project on climate and water in vulnerable mountain regions.
Prof. Beniston also held a full professorship position as head of the Department of
Geosciences at the University of Fribourg from 1996-2006. He has organized since 1995 the
international and inter-disciplinary Wengen Workshops on Global Change Research in the
Bernese Alps, that bring together leading researchers at the international level to discuss
topics relevant to global change issues. He is a member of international scientific
committees in Austria, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the EU, and was elected to the
Academia Europea in 2000.
Visitors may park their cars at the Cash-Card operated Car park 2A opposite Engineering Block 3A.
