UNIT 1: CRITICAL READING AND ANALYSIS OF AN AUTHOR
Course Objective(s): •Demonstrate close reading skills and analysis of a variety of texts
•Evaluate research as it makes and supports academic arguments
•Introduce coherent arguments in writing through strong thesis statements
Unit Objective(s):
•Produce an essay deconstructing an author’s style, tone, point of view,
characters, and language structure
•Present and support an academic analysis in response to an author’s body of
work

Writing Assignment 1a: They Say I Say, pp. xvi-101
(Preface, Part 1, Ch. 1-3, and Part 2, Ch. 4-7 and journal
entries. Post these on Blackboard, run a hard copy to mark
and to bring to class for discussion
