Learner Registration Guidelines & Deadlines
Centres are required to register their learners with the Institute of British Sign Language (IBSL) within the
deadlines explained below.
Learners must be registered using the IBSL Learner Registration form (LRF), and full details of each learner
for each individual course/programme are required on these forms including the learner’s unique learning
number (ULN). No assessments may be carried out until the LRF is received and acknowledged by IBSL,
except for one-day courses as detailed below.
One day courses
These are courses that are normally delivered in one day or over a weekend such as:


Deaf Awareness courses
Deafblind Awareness courses
For these very short programmes, a centre can register their course by email or telephone in order to
obtain the examination papers (which may be sent electronically), and follow up with learner registration
details with the return of the completed examination papers within FIVE working days of the examination
taking place.
Certificates will NOT be issued until the fees are paid within 15 working days of the one-day course.
Other Short courses
Other short courses are those of 15 weeks or fewer in duration.
Learners on such courses must be registered with IBSL within 15 working days (3 calendar weeks) of the
start of the course, and the fees paid before certification can take place.
Long courses
Long courses are those of 16 weeks or more in duration.
Learners on such courses must be registered with IBSL within 35 working days (7 calendar weeks) of the
start of the course.
Failure to register learners as indicated:



could result in difficulties in issuing the Recommendation for the Award of Credit form;
may lead to a delay in issuing achievement certificates;
will incur a late registration fee of £24.00 per learner.
If any learner joins a course or programme after the start date of the course, these learners must be
registered separately within 15 working days (3 calendar weeks) after they have joined the course, after
which the late registration fee applies.
In all circumstances learners must be registered prior to the end of their course.
Centres should note that where learners are registered more than once to the same unit/course/
programme they will be charged for each unit registration.
These deadlines will be strictly reinforced in future due to compliance with the General Conditions of
Recognition and Skills Funding Agency guidelines.
