AST Faculty Research Assistant Application 1. Title of the Project Linguistics and Faith Formation Susan Willhauck 2. Briefly describe the nature of the research project. This project examines ways of talking and the euphemisms of a particular cultural group and what they have to do with faith formation. It investigates the thought of philosophers and theologians to develop a concrete approach within pastoral theology for understanding the relation between cultural sayings and faith. I wish to develop the argument that linguistics has more theological influence and contribution than is imagined throughout the life cycle. The research will seek to discover how euphemisms (including some slang) which provide wisdom in various social groups also contribute certain teachings which enhance faith and moral development. This research involves further exploration of the relationship between linguistics (evolutionary and social linguistics, including the origin of words and phrases) and theology, i.e. how words and the way that words are put together teach about God. My goal with the help of a research assistant, if approved, is to gather the data, analyze it and formulate some theories about language and faith formation. I plan to make my findings available in an accessible resource or textbook. My target audience is primarily educators and ministers or anyone interested in faith formation or spiritual development. Secondarily, the research should prove useful for scholars interested in linguistics and theology, as I feel called to contribute to this ongoing discussion. 3.
