When calling the school district, it is always important to understand who you are speaking
with and to what extent they are able to assist you. Different people have different skill sets
and roles which fall into three general categories:

Teachers – can consult about how your child is behaving and performing in school. They
are also responsible for seeing that the child’s IEP – Individualized Education Plan is
followed.

Counselors – can help your child deal with social issues encountered in the school
setting. They are also prepared to help students with mild EBD – Emotional or
Behavioral Disturbance.

School Social Workers – can help your child develop and put in place an IEP –
Individualized Education Plan. They are also prepared to help students with EBD –
Emotional Behavioral Disturbance or SED – Severe Emotional Disorder.
