Personal Profile Instructions

I suggest that you type your name and major at the top of your personal
profile. Do not create a formal greeting or a title.

Choose your words carefully. Your prospective cooperating teacher will
form her/his first impression of you from reading your profile.

Do not try to be erudite. Write in a voice that’s natural for you.

Highlight your interests in the subject matter you will teach. Mention
some of your favorite courses, interests, experiences.

You should include descriptions of specific contributions you have made
as a pre-service educator. Anecdotes are always effective. Lists of
accomplishments are impersonal, and often ineffective.

Share personal experiences that will help the prospective cooperating
teacher get a sense of who you are. These experiences, however, should
illustrate your commitment to teaching, learning, and young people.

One or two pages will be sufficient.

Word process. Spell and grammar check. Have someone proofread your
work before you hand it in.

Your paper must be free of errors. I will not send your profile to
prospective cooperating teachers if it contains errors. You will receive an
e-mail from me instructing you to correct errors and reprint copies for
your file so be certain to save a copy on your computer.

Four copies are required.
COOPERATING SCHOOLS K-12/SECONDARY STUDENT TEACHING
Please make your selection of student teaching sites from this list. I will attempt to place you in one of the three
districts/schools of your choice, but this may not be possible. Since the Director of K-12/Secondary Student Teaching has
responsibilities to fulfill on campus, placement of as many student teachers as possible in close proximity to the College of
Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University is desirable.

Guidelines for Student Teachers
Initial Responsibilities
1. After you are informed of your student teaching assignment, call your
cooperating teachers to arrange an appointment for a preliminary visit.
Arrive promptly and dress professionally. During this visit try to do the
following:
A. Meet your cooperating teacher and the principal if possible.
B. Visit the school secretary and ask to be placed on the school
mailing list if possible.
C. Ask for a teacher or student teacher handbook.
D. Become familiar with the basic textbooks you will be using.
E. Ask your cooperating teacher if you can develop your own
teaching unit. Explain that you are responsible for creating a
two-week teaching unit during either your first or second
rotation.
F. Obtain a school calendar to follow during your student teaching
experience.
G. Study the schools’ websites before you visit the schools.
2. During your student teaching experience you are to free yourself from
all college campus responsibilities (except mandatory student teaching
seminars). You are not to be enrolled in any other college course. You
are also encouraged to provide sufficient time to fulfill your student
teaching responsibilities. Student teachers may not be employed as
dormitory resident assistants.
3. You are discouraged from participating in sports or other extracurricular
activities during your student teaching experience.
4. Concrete evidence of personal professional liability protection in the form
of membership in a recognized professional organization or an insurance
policy providing a minimum of one million dollars and personal liability
insurance must be on file in the Education Department at the college
before you begin student teaching.
It is your responsibility to arrange for housing and transportation.
