You will have access to Chapter 1 of Calculus, Fifth Edition, by Hughes Hallett et al, published by Wiley and you can access a PDF file of the text in the Content area of the D2L site for this course. Graphing calculator (TI 83, 83 Plus, 84, or 84 Plus recommended) A graphing calculator is an important tool that will be used throughout this course. Students are expected to have a working calculator for the final exam. No calculator swapping is permitted during the exam. There may be some quizzes for which the calculator is not allowed. WebAssign account and access for this class. There will be no charge for use of WebAssign for MATH 122A. Go to http://webassign.net to create your account. Grades will be no lower than those set forth in the following table 225 points 250 200 points 224 175 points 199 150 points 174 0 points 149 90% to 100% 80% to 89% 70% to 79% 60% to 69% 0% to 59% A B C D E Note: A grade of C or better in Math 122A is a necessary prerequisite for Math 122B (First Semester Calculus). Students who earn a grade below C will be enrolled in MATH 120R (Preparation for Calculus) for the remainder of the semester. ATTENDANCE: Attendance and class participation are required and expected. You are responsible for any information given in class, posted in the class D2L website, in WebAssign, or sent by email from your instructor. Notify the instructor in advance if you must miss class, arrive late for class, or leave early from class. Students who miss the first 2 days of class without contacting the instructor with an acceptable reason will be administratively dropped from the course. A student with more than 3 absences from the class over the duration of the course may be administratively dropped from the course. HOMEWORK and QUIZZES: Homework will be submitted in two formats throughout the semester. A computer assignment and grading program called WebAssign will be used for most of the homework problems. The WebAssign homework will account for 40 of the 50 homework/quiz points. Additional assignments will require the submission of written work. These assignments may include problems from the textbook and/or supplemental problems provided by your instructor. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Quizzes will be short and have an open notes format. No make-up quizzes will be given. Written homework and quizzes will account for 10 of the 50 homework/quiz points. Actual points for homework, class work, and quizzes will exceed 50 points. Your final score for this portion of the course will be scaled to 50 points. Several scores will be dropped before calculating the final grade. Studying together and discussing assigned problems is permitted and encouraged. However the paper turned in for grading must be your own work. Copying someone else’s work is a violation of the Code of Academic Integrity. Such violations will be reported according to University policy and will result in serious penalties. See the Homework Information and Policies handout for more information about homework. FINAL EXAM: The Department final exam will be on Friday, September 7th, 4:00-6:00 PM (room TBA). This is a common Departmental final. All students taking MATH 122A take the same final exam. If you have a legitimate conflict with this time (University class or sanctioned activity), let your instructor know immediately. TUTORING and OFFICE HOURS: The University tutoring services are provided by the Think Tank. This tutoring is free and extensive hours are available to you. You can find information about hours and locations at http://thinktank.arizona.edu/. I also recommend that you take advantage of scheduled office hours to get extra help or to talk about your progress in the course. If you are not able to come during scheduled office hours or need to see me between office hours, send an email to mikel@math.arizona.edu to schedule an appointment with me. DROP DATES & INCOMPLETES: If you withdraw from the course by Sunday, August 26th , the course will be deleted from your record. Thursday, August 30th is the last day to drop the course with a W on your record. Withdrawals after August 30th require a Dean’s signature and are only allowed under unusual circumstances. An incomplete may be awarded if ALL of the following conditions are met: 1) you have completed all but a small portion of the required work, 2) you have scored at least 50% on the work already completed, 3) you have a valid reason for not completing the course on time, and 4) you ask for the incomplete within 48 hours after the final exam. CLASSROOM CONDUCT: You are expected to behave in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. The overriding principle of the class is to have everyone contribute to having an optimal learning environment. Food and drinks (except a water bottle) are prohibited in classrooms by University policy.
