Class Overview/Objectives:
In this course, which as presented in Grades K-8, the basic understandings in number, operation, and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry; measurement; and probability and statistics are essential foundations for all work in high school mathematics. Students continue to build on this foundation as they expand their understanding through other mathematical experiences. While studying Geometry content, students will:
use spatial reasoning and be able to think geometrically
study geometric figures of zero, one, two, and three dimensions and relationships
find a connection between geometry and the real worlds and make use of geometric ideas to solve problems
Use a variety of representations (concrete, pictorial, numerical, symbolic, graphical, and verbal), tools, and technology to model mathematical situations to solve meaningful problems
Use problem-solving, language and communication, and reasoning (justification and proof) to make connections within and outside mathematics.
Student Expectations:
1.
Master 10 th Grade Geometry TEKS and STAAR Supporting and Readiness Standards
2.
Successfully complete all course requirements, including class work, homework, quizzes, exams, projects, etc.
Supplies needed EVERYDAY*:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Sharpened pencils
Notebook paper
1” 3-ring binder – Keep all handouts given in class, notes taken, etc.
1 subject spiral notebook for Problems of the Day
*Talk to the teacher if you need help obtaining some of the required supplies
Class Rules – All students must:
Have their supplies and be in their seat before the tardy bell rings ready to work.
Bring notebook paper, spiral, binder, and have a writing utensil (lead pencil) everyday for class.
Keep all limbs to one self and talk when called upon with positive words.
Follow ALL school rules
Follow ALL class procedures and rules
Have NO cell phones or mp3 players (will be taken away immediately)
1 st offense – device will be taken away and returned at the end of the class in exchange for a signed note by the student promising not to use it again.
2 nd offense – device will be taken away once again, and will be turned in to a security guard. The student’s parent/guardian will have to come to school and pay a mandatory fee in order to get device.
If problem persists, the device will be confiscated by a security guard and parent contact/conference will take effect.
Classroom Routine:
1.
Bell Work: Before tardy bell student should be in desk working on bell ringer/work.
2.
Review: Be prepared to share response or listen to clarify questions
3.
Lecture: Be ready to receive a new lesson or review previous lesson
4.
Guided Practice: Participate actively during class lecture/lesson
5.
Independent/Group Practice: Work diligently or go to assigned group
6.
Assessment: Verbal group or individual/Exit Card/Quiz
Class Discipline Procedure:
Geometry: 10th Grade Course Syllabus (2014 – 2015)
1.
If a student fails to follow any school or class rules, or has difficulty following class expectations or procedures within the class period, the following disciplinary procedure will be followed:
Step 1: Verbal Reminder
Step 2:
Step 3:
Written Documentation & Conference with student
Parent Notification (via written notice, phone call, voice message, or conference)
Step 4: Referral to Office
Grading Procedures for ALL graded work:
Exams – 40% Quizzes – 15% Projects – 10% Classwork/Homework – 20%
1.
Six Weeks Exam – 15%
Attendance is part of every class work grade (assignments, quizzes, tests, etc). If a student is tardy, their grade for the day’s assignment(s) will be affected.
2.
3.
4.
Work must be turned in on the due date in order to be eligible to receive full credit.
No make up work for incomplete or low grades will be offered – Do not turn in sloppy or incomplete work because there will be no means to make that grade up, other than higher grades on remaining assignments.
(This does not include excused absences, which will have a separate due date, depending on the student’s return to class)
Make-up work for excused absences will be issued upon the student’s return to class WITH AN EXCUSED
5.
ABSENTEE SLIP from the Attendance/Front Office. If a student returns from an absence WITHOUT an excused absentee slip, the assignments missed will be marked “Late”. Students need to be responsible in obtaining an absentee slip upon their return to school and turning it in at the beginning of each class.
Late work will be accepted for partial credit (no higher than 70%) up to ONE WEEK after due date and before graded assignment is returned.
All other late work will be eligible for a grade no higher than 60%. GET YOUR WORK TURNED IN ON TIME.
If an assignment has to be re-issued , the assignment will be considered late and will either follow grading
6.
7.
procedure 5 if turned in within one week after original due date; or follow grading procedure 6 if turned in later than one week from the original due date.
I am looking forward to a successful and enjoyable year. This will rely on each person doing their part to contribute to a positive learning environment and experience. I expect all of my 10 th grade students to always conduct themselves in a manner that best represents their positive qualities and contributes to a successful, safe, positive, and enjoyable learning environment. Prepare to work hard as you expand your knowledge further in mathematics.
