Draw, label, and describe the parts of a Streamside Management Zone (SMZ)- see attached
papers
Know: total global water = 97% saline, 2% snow and ice, 1% available freshwater
Know: total freshwater = 77% snow and ice; 22 % groundwater; 1% rivers, soil, lakes,
atmosphere
Know water us withdrawals can be consumptive and/or non-consumptive
Know: groundwater definition- water that is found underground in cracks and spaces in soil,
sand , and rocks
Know: groundwater accounts for 51% of all drinking water for the US, 99% of drinking water for
the rural US, and 37% of US agriculture use (mostly irrigation)
Know: hydrology definition- the study of occurrence, movement, and quality of water beneath
the earth’s surface and groundwater interaction with geological formations
Know: importance of forests to hydrology- forest cover holds soil in place, provide additional
water storage, and maintain infiltration capacities.
Know: erosion definition- the detachment and transport of sediment in both natural and
accelerated forms
Know: Sedimentation definition- deposition of sediment
Know: types of erosion- surface erosion (wind and water caused), channel erosion (water
caused), and mass movement (gravity caused)
Know: SMZ functions- shade water surfaces, assimilate nutrients in soil and vegetation, trap
sediment in overland flow, intercept aerial chemical inputs, trap large woody debris, provide
organic matter input to water body, stabilize shorelines
Know: four groups or types of criteria used to describe water quality- physical, chemical,
biological, radiological
Name two pathways for gross precipitation to reach the forest flow beneath a dense forest
canopy- throughfall and stemflow
Name four possible pathways for water to reach a stream channel- base flow, overland flow,
subsurface storm flow, direct interception by channel
Determine the acreage for the watershed indicated in the attached map
Know VA Department of Forestry Riparian Forest Handbook located at
http://www.dof.virginia.gov/resinfo/resources/Riparian-Forest-Handbook_1.pdf
What to bring to the quiz:

Calculator, pencils, colored pencils/markers, DOT grid, washable marker
