Intern/Extern/Co-op Program Information for Juniors
Various health care facilities offer internships or externships to BSN students between junior and senior year.
You must have successfully completed NURS 360/361 Adult Transitions in order to receive an internship or
externship. You then register for NURS 410 in fall semester of senior year. NURS 410 fulfills the nursing elective
requirement. The syllabus for NURS 410 is on the Current Students web page or CLICK HERE.
(NOTE: NURS 410 is not offered in the spring or the summer semester.)
If you are interested in pursuing an opportunity that has not previously been approved you must provide to Dr.
Susan Schmidt (Schmidt@xavier.edu or 513-745-3815) printed information about including the program’s
contact and phone number and email so that it can be reviewed.
Listed below are programs that have previously been approved by Dr. Schmidt. Health care systems often do
not have summer program information available until January or February Check websites periodically.
The Christ Hospital: https://www.thechristhospital.com/about-the-network/clinical-education/nursingresidency . The residency is for graduate RNs. Also listed on the page is the Perioperative Nurse Externship
Program for nursing students who will be entering their final year.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center: www.cincinnatichildrens.org/careers, click the box that applies
to your status with Cincinnati Children’s and navigate to the appropriate page. Search for nurse extern positions.
We usually receive an email from CCHMC with instructions for application when they are posted. We will
forward it to you. Expect to see it by early February.

Mercy Health: Co-op program: will be offered and information will be posted in late January or early February.

Premier Health (north of Cincinnati): The status of the student nurse externship program is unknown for
Summer 2016 and a decision is not expected until February. After the first of the year contact Miami Valley
Hospital at (937) 208-8000 and ask for the Center for Nursing Excellence.
