ISM 3A: Author Development; Cohort 4: Summer/Fall 2012 ISM 3A: Author Development Module August 1, 2012 – November 19, 2012 (PAS abstract deadline: Nov 15) Connie Baldwin, ISM Leader (constance_baldwin@urmc.rochester.edu ) Instructions From now through mid-November, you have an opportunity to sharpen your writing skills, culminating in preparation of an abstract potentially suitable for submission for a presentation at the PAS spring meeting in Boston. (If your study is not yet ready for dissemination, don’t panic! You can write a mock abstract that should serve as a useful draft for the real abstract next year!) You will not be writing a paper during this ISM, but writing an abstract is a perfect way to plan a paper, so I encourage you to keep a future paper in mind as your develop and discuss your abstract. If your abstract is accepted, the day after your PAS presentation would be a very useful deadline for submission of that paper. This ISM includes: Online self-directed learning activities: working through the Author Development module Practical experiential activities: drafting, discussing, refining and submitting your abstract Interactive activities: discussing your project and your abstract with your home-based project mentor and a peer partner(s), and participating in a conference call on writing issues As you work on your abstract, we recommend that you consult with your mentor, and possibly also your ESP faculty advisor. We have divided your group into pairs (see next page) for discussion of your writing tasks and the abstract. You may choose to use either email or telephone. Even though you will be emailing to exchange documents with your peer partner, it is important that you upload documents on your MyESP page as requested in the assignment schedule (see highlights), so we can track your work. All scholars are expected to participate in an October conference call, to be led by Dr. Baldwin. We know that your schedules are busy, so we will offer a choice of two conference call times: Oct 19 at 5:00pm Eastern or Oct 24 at 5:00pm Eastern. Please make every effort to be on one of those two calls. A conference call number will be provided before the call. The ESP leadership values your feedback on this module—issues large and small. All feedback is welcome as we refine our teaching tools for the ESP. We ask for feedback in two ways: A brief online questionnaire is included at the end of the online module. An ISM Feedback form is provided for you to upload on MyESP The Author Development module can be accessed at this link: http://www.academicpeds.org/espauthoring/page_01.htm The following downloadable files can be found at the end of the Author Development module [click on: Conclusion and Practice Files]: Sentence practice examples Paragraph practice examples Link to module evaluation form The following additional resources are posted on the VLP (accessed through your MyESP page): How the Write Research Abstracts and Articles ACP on Research Abstracts 1 ISM 3A: Author Development; Cohort 4: Summer/Fall 2012 ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE You will be email-exchanging abstracts with your peer partner, but at the end of the ISM, you must UPLOAD the final version of the abstract and your ISM feedback form onto your MyESP page, to get credit for doing this ISM.
