Say What?
Rediscovering the Provocative Claims of Jesus
John 8:1-12
Rediscovering Jesus, the Light of the World
In Christ, we can properly see the Word of God.
4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of
adultery. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such
women. So what do you say?”
Text Message:
o This event takes place during the Feast of Tabernacles.
o A key element during Tabernacles was light, and the temple
was illuminated by four massive, 75 feet tall, candelabra.
o Into this setting Jesus says:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
o Notice how the experts above were blind to the Scriptures:
“If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the
adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”
Leviticus 20:10
o Christ enables us to see the Scriptures through His heart:
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
Luke 24:45
o The Scriptures are not cold and clinical, but life and life-giving!
In Christ, we can gracefully see our own sinfulness.
6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring
against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let
him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.
Text Message:
o Circle what Jesus does twice in response to their question.
o This was not some great mystery, but would be understood by
the Scribes and Pharisees, particularly during Tabernacles:
“O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to
shame; those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth,
for they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living water.
Jeremiah 17:13
o Jesus, without shaming these religious leaders, is allowing
them to see their own sinfulness and extend grace to another.
o In Christ, we can see ourselves as did the apostle Paul
“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.”
Romans 7:18a
o This, however, must never be an excuse to sin:
“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in
order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of
the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4
In Christ, we can joyfully be a Grace Giver.
10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one
condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither
do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Text Message:
o There are two types of people regarding the sin of others:
1) Stone Throwers.
2) Grace Givers.
o Grace givers don’t turn a blind eye to sin, but empower others
toward righteousness.
