E-Waste Collection Details
The University is conducting a faculty and service centre E-Waste collection as part of National
Recycling Week – 8 to 14 November. The collection provides an opportunity to dispose of
redundant electrical and electronic equipment in an environmentally sustainable manner. This is a
free service to faculties and centres and great opportunity to clear out storerooms and cupboards of
this equipment.
What will be collected?
Basically any electrical or electronic equipment other than large white goods such as fridges/freezers
and equipment containing hazardous materials, e.g. some research equipment may contain
mercury. Items for collection include mobile phones, computers, printers, faxes, monitors,
televisions, research equipment, attachments, cables and the like. A full list of items that will be
collected is attached to this email.
Note that any unwanted computers, monitors, printers both SOE and non SOE will be collected .
ITSC staff will manage the disposal of these items.
What do you need to do?
1) Appoint a faculty or centre Co-ordinator to work with the FMO on your campus and
Environmental Services. Please advise John Tandy or Gail Barbera, Campus Managers ML
and JO who your co-ordinator will be.
2) Collect and secure all small items in a central storage area for collection by the FMO. Ideally
this area should be a lockable to prevent unauthorised removal of equipment. Some
equipment may have memory or storage devices containing personal or other sensitive
information. This equipment will be identified and the memory/storage device removed or
destroyed either before disposal or a requirement of the disposal process.
3) Larger items can be left in place for collection by the FMO.
4) The FMO on your campus will provide you with 120 litre wheelie bins for the collection of
small items and cables. (Please do not dispose of any items in any other bins or skip bins).
5) In conjunction with your Faculty / Centre Asset Custodian; ensure you complete an Asset
Disposal and or Decommissioning form for any type of asset being disposed. These forms are
available at http://www.fbsc.ecu.edu.au/fina/html/forms.cfm . Andrew Dallimore and
Stephen Seeds, FBSC Financial Accounting, can also provide further advice on the correct
asset disposal procedures.
Prior to the disposal, it is important to consider the correct adherence to policy AD053.

If an asset to be disposed is on the asset register (if item has a barcode) then both the
Decommissioning & Disposal Forms need to be completed prior to disposal.

If the asset being disposed is not on the asset register then only the Disposal Form is to
be completed prior to disposal.

All disposals need to be co-ordinated with Financial Accounting and the FMO prior to
disposal.
All disposals are preferred to be made with the University’s appointed contractor.
