[September 3, 2014] – Sam Nunn, a Coast Guard veteran and former U.S. Senator, will be honored for his service to country and community at the United States Navy Memorial’s 2014 Lone Sailor Awards Dinner on Wednesday, September 17. The black tie gala will be held at The National Building Museum located at 401 F Street NW, Washington, D.C. Throughout his 24-year-long tenure in the U.S. Senate as a member of the Democratic Party, Senator Nunn received recognition for being a leading expert in Congress, and all of the United States, on national security and foreign policy. Senator Nunn currently serves as the cochairman and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a charitable organization working to reduce the global threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. After attending Georgia Tech and graduating from Emory University, Senator Nunn received his law degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1962. He actively served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and then went on to serve six years in the Coast Guard Reserve while practicing law and managing his family farm in his hometown of Perry, Georgia. “I am honored and humbled to receive such a prestigious award," said Senator Nunn. “The Coast Guard protects our nation and our citizens every hour of every day, and I am proud of the dedicated men and women of the Coast Guard who carry out its many responsibilities with courage and commitment. To be recognized by this group is a very special honor.” Senator Nunn began his political career as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1968. Four years later, he was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served as chairman of the powerful U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services and the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. His most notable legislative achievements include the landmark Department of Defense Reorganization Act and the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program which has deactivated more than 7,500 nuclear warheads to date. In 1994, along with President Jimmy Carter and General Colin Powell, Senator Nunn successfully managed to force the departure of military dictator Lieutenant General Raoul Cédras from Haiti. Senator Nunn, along with Republican Senator Richard Lugar, received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations for the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program. In 2004, they were jointly awarded the Heinz Awards Chairman’s Medal for their work. In addition to his work with NTI, Senator Nunn is a distinguished professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech where he hosts the Sam Nunn Policy Forum. The Lone Sailor Award is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their respective civilian careers while exemplifying the Navy core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. In receiving the Lone Sailor Award, Senator Nunn joins an impressive list of men and women who have distinguished themselves by drawing upon their military experience. Other 2014 Lone Sailor Award recipients include Bob Stevens, Executive Chairman of Lockheed Martin and Marine Corps veteran, and Jim Skinner, former McDonalds CEO and Navy veteran.
