Aluminum cans are turned back into aluminum cans, and can be recycled almost indefinitely. Counterpoint in Livingston will take your aluminum cans. Steel cans are used in other steel products such as car parts and construction materials. It can also be recycled over and over again. Plastic bottles are recycled into carpet, clothing, auto parts, and new bottles. Paper is recycled into new paper. Some grades of paper can be recycled up to seven times. According to the EPA, manufacturing one desktop computer requires fossil fuels and chemicals that amount to at least 9 times the weight of the computer! More than 90% of electronic equipment is recyclable. Cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, chromium, barium, beryllium and brominated flameretardant materials are components that can pollute water and air resources without proper disposal or recycling. Cell phones are made from valuable resources such as precious metals, copper, and plastics—all of which require energy to mine and process. One of the fastest growing [hazardous] waste streams is e-waste such as computers, television sets and mobile cell phones. Hazardous waste is threatening human health and the environment globally.
