Pediatricians are MD’s who specialize in treating children 2. Work with children from birth to college age 3. Specialty is focused on youth 4. Perform consultations 5. Often patient is too young to speak – must work / communicate with parents 6. Perform- lab work / tests / blood test / to get proper diagnosis 7. Administer immunization and provide extensive care if necessary 8. Administrative duties a. Handle all paper work with visits from patients b. Provide proper prescriptions c. Charting that goes along with each patient III. Education / training 1. First one must get a bachelor degree 2. Then they must graduate from medical school 3. All states require them to be licensed after education requirements are met 4. Serve a 2 yr. residency a. This is usually done in the pediatric unit (an area within a hospital specializing in the care of critically ill infants, children, and teenagers.) 5.
