Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, February 17th
when we will be having our second semester Parent-Teacher
Conferences. This is earlier in the semester than we usually
schedule this night, but it is early enough in the quarter to allow students to be able to still affect their 3rd Quarter grades.
This conference is from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and we will be in the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center and in the Cafeteria.
Also, to provide for these meetings, students will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m. on that day. Since some of your children have
changed teachers for this semester, this will give you a chance to at least meet these individuals so involved in your child’s
life.
Many of you have questions about snow days and possible make-up days. We had two extra “snow days” built into
our school calendar, but have used three for snow and ice. This means that we will have at least one day to make-up. I
want to see how the rest of the month goes before making a final decision about make-up day(s). I will let you know of the
final decision for this by the end of February.

Remember, there is information here that is not listed in the parent email!
We have 240 students for whom we still do not have updated shot records. As you know, an Indiana law passed
last summer listed additional shots required for students between 6th and 12th grades. If you have received notification that
proof of these shots is needed, the deadline to be sure they are in to our Registrar Susie Thornburg is Tuesday, February
15, 2011. If you wish to fax records to her, the fax number is 31/-543-5050 attn. Susie Thornburg.
Here are the changes regarding immunizations:
New Immunizations required by State of Indiana for students in grades 9 – 12.
After August, 2010 every child in Indiana who enters grade 9 – 12 shall be immunized against pertussis with
booster shots (Tdap) for all 11-12 year old children. This is a change in the law (410 IAC 1-1-1) as well as two
additional immunizations required for students in grades 6 – 12. They are 1 dose of meningococcal conjugate
vaccine (MCV4) and a second dose of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine. We have added the minimum
immunization requirement for your review. All shot records must be updated and current in the student file at his
or her school.
If you want to check the new law, please read this: 2010-11 New Immunization
Requirements, these are the basic directives: Indiana law requires the following
immunizations for school attendance:
Grades 6-12: 5 DPT, 4 Polio, 2 MMR, 3 Hepatitis B, 2 Varicella, 1 Tdap, 1 MCV4
ATTENTION: 3 NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR 6TH-12TH GRADERS

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER NEWS:
The Battle of the Books team is in full swing toward the April 14 competition at Ben Davis. The 8-member team,
moderated by Mrs. Jenny Herron, reads and studies 8 different Eliot Rosewater winners (Best Young Adult Hoosier
Books) and prepares for written tests and lightning-round stages of competition against surrounding area high
school teams. The team includes: Jackson McGrath, Brenna Holland, Bailey Lewis, Danila Burnham, Kaylee
Titsworth, Audrey Gelb, Abigail Helvering, and Willy Dimond.
Several entries have already been received for the library/media center’s “What Makes You hAPPy?” best educational app
contest. Students are encouraged to share their favorite educational apps for use on iPhone, iPod, iPad, or Smartphone.
See a librarians for details, the deadline is February 18. The winner receives a $25.00 iTunes gift cardJ
Recently our technology crew installed the computer game “Civilization IV” on one of the library/media
center’s computers. Students are welcome to access this and play during resource and before & after
school. Recent studies indicate that educational gaming is gaining popularity among educators,
especially in math and science. “Civilization IV” has been reviewed by educational journals as
instructive in social and political history.
The American Library Association announced January 10th the top young adult media awards, and several of these winners
are displayed now in our library, available for check out by students, parents, and staff. Remember, because we’re an
Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library branch, items checked out at any IMCPL branch can be returned here at CHS,
and students may request any IMCPL item be sent here for check out.

If anyone has tickets to events i.e. Pacers, Ice, IRT, Circus etc that you are unable to use
please contact Mike Feeney at 968-7348 or mfeeney@cathedral-irish.org We would like to
make unused tickets available to our teachers or students who would otherwise not be able
to attend these events.
Dear parents of seniors,
The senior class has traditionally attended a Shakespearean play at the IRT. We are continuing that
tradition by having the seniors attend a matinee production of IRT’s In Acting Shakespeare on Monday, February 21. The
tickets cost $9.25, and students need to bring that money to their English teachers as soon as possible. Teachers would
appreciate if students could bring exact change or pay by check made out to Cathedral High School. Their payment of that
money is your approval of their attendance.
Transportation is not provided by Cathedral High School, so students will need to drive
themselves. We urge them to carpool with other students. The most reasonable parking rates
can be found in the Circle Center Mall parking garages. We will give them a map to the theatre.
The students will attend the matinee that begins at 10:00 AM. We ask that they meet us at the
IRT by 9:40. The play will last approximately two hours. After the performance, the students are
released for the day. They do not report to school in the morning, and they are free after the
performance.
Finally, we will be discussing theatre etiquette and asking students to dress
appropriately for the play. Because the students represent Cathedral High School, we require them to be on their best
behavior. We ask young men to wear shirts and ties and dress pants. Young ladies may wear appropriate length dresses
or skirts or dress pants. No students should wear jeans. We appreciate your support in this area.
If you have any problems or questions, please contact Mrs. Keyes at Cathedral High School.
Kathy Keyes (kkeyes@cathedral-irish.org
Spanish Competition Team will be practicing every Wednesday before school from 6:45 until 7:30 in the Nuttall Lab
and after school from 3:15 to 4:00 in the MML. There are still spots available if your student would like to be on the team!
There is also a category for Heritage Speakers who speak Spanish in the home. Please email Mrs. Rose Egan
(regan@cathedral-irish.org) if you have questions.

8
during one of their Theology classes to complete registration. Juniors will go to the computer lab with the College
Advisors during one of their US History classes to register for their senior-year classes.
 Once online registration is complete, students will bring home a copy of their selected classes. A parent-signed
copy of the schedule must be returned to the Guidance office.

Director of Guidance and College Advising
On behalf of the French department, we would like to remind parents that we will be
having our French exchange students coming in the spring from Lyon, France. They will
be here from April 20 until May 5th and we are in need of several families to host these
students in their homes. If interested, please contact Gary Spurgin or Kathy Darnell here at

I am pleased to announce that the Catholic Youth Organization is once again able to provide
Cathedral High School with one-campership (scholarship to attend camp) at Camp Rancho
Framasa in Brown County. This is a six-day session to Traditional (ages 7 – 16) or Adventure (ages
13 – 15) camping and is valued at $425. The camp is coed. If you are interested, please see Mr.
Worland in his office, or contact him at dworland@cathedral-irish.org or at 317/968-7337. You will be
asked to write a 500-word essay and have an interview with one or two Cathedral staff members.
On February 14th we will be beginning a program for young women called “ENDOW: Educating on the Nature and
Dignity of Women”. This is a study group that meets once a week for 8 weeks and is open to any female student.
The purpose of this program is to inspire young women with the possibilities of their womanhood, encourage women to
embrace their God-given spiritual and physical gifts, challenge women in service to their families, community, and church
and to support women as they bring their gifts and talents in to the plan that God has laid for them. Study groups will be led
by trained faculty and staff members and we will be using Pope John Paul II’s encyclical called Letter to
Women as well as scripture as part of our study program. We will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, February 14th
in Mrs. Witka’s office off the Student Life Center.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
As Feb still emits an icy greeting, we have the following warm and inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral
students.
Class Service Projects “Anyone can be great. Because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to
serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve…You don’t have to know the second theory of
thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Martin Luther King.
We are reminded by this quote that our service helps us to develop that heart of grace so that we can generously love one
another, as asked in our Christian walk. February has the following service activities to help wrap up our service reporting:
Our freshman will be helping at the Christmas Store on Thursday, Feb 10 to prepare for next year’s Christmas. On
Saturday, Feb 12, our juniors will prepare and serve a tasty lunch at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. Join our service
leadership workshop on February 19 as Cathedral alums inspire us with their life experiences in serving community needs.
We invite students and parents to save the date of Feb 26 to help at University of Indianapolis in our MAKE IT MINE IPS
outreach. Details on all of these on-going class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities as wonderful
expressions of our ability to gather at the table with our brothers and sisters.
Grant Writing Any students interested in working on grants for Marion Country projects, please see Mrs. Halstead about
your interest or contact her via email at chalstead@cathedral-irish.org. The deadline for these grants would be Feb 18 and
16
you earn service hours for your grant writing and project development. Earning grants shows another area of depth for
college application.
USO Evening at Camp Atterbury Over thirty Cathedral students and ten adults traveled to Camp Atterbury last Saturday
evening. We recorded valentine video messages and shared an evening of games and solidarity with soldiers from New
Mexico and Pennsylvania heading out on a peace keeping mission to Kosovo. Our hearts grew in solemn
acknowledgement of the commitment served by these men and women for our country and we enjoyed the opportunity to
directly thank them. The soldiers all expressed their appreciation for our time spent with them and we left, knowing that we
had received the richest gift, the honor of saluting them. This endeavor has been wonderfully led by junior Liz Subrin for
two years now. Our next trip will be March 12.
Catholic Charities Refugee Drive A multitude of hygiene items, lamps, TVs and other sundry items have been donated to
support the Catholic Charities Refugee Center. Our appreciation is extended to all students, families, faculty and staff for
their donations to aid the refugees relocated from their home lands who arrive in Indianapolis displaced and without family.
Our two ambassadors, Katy Hoeper, sophomore, and Liz Subrin, junior, have dynamically led us in this important and
heartfelt collection.
S.A.I.L (Students Active in Initiative and Leadership) Workshop Students are invited to a leadership workshop on
Saturday, Feb 19 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM at Cathedral in the SLC. The fee for this workshop is $25. The morning
session will be guided by the leadership experiences of four noteworthy Cathedral alumni, who are actively engaged in not
for profit agencies in the Indianapolis community. The afternoon session will include break-out sessions to focus upon the
work and worth of these agencies in our Indianapolis community. Our students will have an opportunity to direct how the
collective donation of $10 per person (part of the workshop fee of $25) will be used by the agency to further its community
work. We will close the session with a zumba and ukulele lesson. If needed, scholarship may be applied for the workshop
fee. See registration form and flyer for details. Four service hours may be earned. Any questions, please contact Cheri
Halstead, email chalstead@cathedral-irish.org or 968 7317. Alumni will be speaking from their leadership experiences at
Big Brother Big Sister, St. Vincent De Paul, Catholic Charities Refugee Center and Habitat for Humanity.
“Make It Mine” Service Outreach Cathedral students will lead another wonderful day of engagement for IPS middle
school students on Saturday, February 26 at the University of Indianapolis. Cathedral artists, musicians, athletes, scholars
and dancers will lead six activity centers regarding music, art, athletics, reading, writing, and art. The theme of the day is
MAKE IT MINE. More than 150 Cathedral students will be needed to be reading buddies during the next year and to
encourage the reading of EIGHT books. Our next MAKE IT MINE event will take place at University of Indianapolis on
Saturday, February 26. Reserve this date now in your calendar to help out on this special day. We performed a smaller
Make It Mine event on December 4 at IPS 106. Mrs. Foster, the school principal, shares that the rest of her fifth and sixth
grade students cannot wait until our February 26 event at the University of Indianapolis. Click here for the sign up form.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hour detail and summary by year. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were
due December 1, 2010 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11,
freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these
underclassmen will be shown as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. If the hours
for this year are completed by March 1, hours earned after March 1 may be credited to the next year’s
requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted
more than sixty days after the date of service performance.

have other problems with the linked documents, please proceed to the website to access links from the Service
Opportunities area
under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11 are due on March 1,
2011. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2010-2011 were due on December 1, 2010. Click here for
the 2010-11 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2009-10 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Cordially Invite YOU to Become a Rugger!
Please come to our 2011 Season Registration Night!
Rugby is an exciting, physically challenging game - a forerunner to our modern football. The action never stops – and it is
lots of fun! (Just ask any current player!)
We need lots of young men to come out and join our State Champion team! We want students to join us from both Chatard

In order to play, we have lots of paperwork to gather in a short time, and we will not be registering on-line with the state this
year. Our fees are $400 – however, if you cannot manage this amount, please come out to play and we will work things out
financially. We do not want to let finances dictate any young man’s participation.
The registration meeting has already occurred, but if you are still interested, please contact mrsmahamm@sbcglobal.net

Student-Athlete Tip of the Week: (1-31-11) Property of Billy Shepherd Sports and provided by the NFHS
If your sport was taken away from you today because of an injury or being cut from a team, would you still be the
same type of person your school and family would be proud of?
 Hopefully your answer would be a big "YES!”
 Don't let a sport determine who you are as a person. Let that be determined by your morals, behavior and attitude.
For more on the student-athlete go to www.askbillyshep.com and www.nfhs.org.

Meditation:
Meditation: Mark 7:14-23
“What comes out of a person, that is what defiles.” (Mark 7:20)
Have you ever felt like you were leading two different lives? On the one hand, there’s the “you” that everyone sees on a
daily basis. It’s the personality you project to the world, maybe even to your closest friends and loved ones. But on the other
hand, there may be a “you” that you keep hidden—a person who is hiding sins and imperfections, always trying to put on a
good show.
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus explains that the origins of sin and defilement are in the dispositions of the heart. In other
words, the out-ward expressions of sin—cheating, lying, stealing, acts of impurity—all start as germs of thought and desire
in our hearts. Think of an iceberg: A small portion is visible, but the biggest chunk of ice is below the surface. A ship’s
captain may think that the tip of the iceberg is just a chunk of floating ice, nothing worth worrying about. But if he fails to
account for the foundation, the results could be disastrous. In a similar way, if we discount our own sins as random acts of
disobedience without dealing with what is churning away in our hearts, we too are asking for trouble. The hidden portion of
the iceberg is still there and still very dangerous.
Experience tells us that what is in our hearts will eventually affect our behavior and our relation-ships. Holding on to sin in
secret will darken our spiritual clarity and wound our friends and family members—often in ways we may not expect. And
then there is also the stress we experience from trying to keep parts of our lives in the dark and having to keep up an act.
Imagine how much peace we would have if our inner hearts and outer lives truly were reflections of Christ. Today, let’s try to
do just that, by bringing our inner darkness into the light of Christ. The best place to do this is in the confessional, but even
in our daily lives, through the gift of repentance, we can begin the process of healing and reconciliation. Come clean to the
Lord, and watch to see how he brings peace and clarity to your heart!
Blessings,
Principal
