ACADEMIC SECTION - JIPMER– 4th CONVOCATION – 2013 Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry traces its origin to ‘Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry’ established by the French Government in 1823. In 1956, the Ambassador of France laid the foundation stone for the Medical College in Pondicherry town. In the wake of the ‘de facto’ transfer of Pondicherry to the Government of India, the college was briefly named Dhanvantri Medical College, before being upgraded to a Regional Postgraduate Center under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (DGHS), Government of India and renamed JIPMER. The then President of India Dr.S.Radhakrishnan inaugurated the hospital and the outpatient buildings on 13th July 1964. JIPMER serves as a tertiary care Medical Institution not only to the population of Puducherry, but also to the neighboring states of Tamilnadu, Karnataka etc. Outreach center is functioning in Karaikal an enclave of the Union Territory of Puducherry. JIPMER would be completing 50 years of excellent Medical Education, Research and patient care services, during July 2014. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research was declared as an Institution of National Importance by a Parliamentary Act, i.e. JIPMER Puducherry, Act, 2008 with effect from 14th July 2008. As per the provisions contained in the Act, the Institute is empowered to award degrees and the same are deemed to be included in the Schedules of the respective Acts of Medical Council of India, Nursing Council of India, Dental Council of India etc. JIPMER offers Ph.D. programs in 8 disciplines with an annual intake of 20 seats, Super Specialty programs (DM/M.Ch.) in 14 disciplines with an annual intake of 28 seats, Post-Doctoral Fellowship programs in 5 disciplines with an annual intake of 13 seats. Postgraduate programs offered are MD/MS in 23 disciplines with an annual intake of 126 seats, M.Sc.(Nursing) programs in 5 disciplines with an annual intake of 25 seats, M.Sc.Allied Medical Sciences in 4 disciplines with an annual intake of 21 seats. MBBS program has an annual intake of 145 seats. B.Sc.(Nursing) and B.Sc.(MLT) programs have an annual intake of 75 and 30 seats respectively. B.Sc.Allied Medical Sciences programs offered in 7 disciplines have an annual intake of 28 seats. Admission to all the programs offered in JIPMER are based on Entrance Examination, conducted by JIPMER at the All India level. Online application process has been introduced for admissions to the Academic Session 2013. The First Convocation was held on 22nd March 2010 and Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Hon’ble Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was the Chief Guest. The Second Convocation was held on 09th April 2011 and Dr.V.Shantha, Chairperson, Cancer Institute (WIA), was the Chief Guest. The Third Convocation was held on 30th June 2012 and Dr.Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, was the Chief Guest and delivered the convocation address. Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, and Shri V.Narayanasamy, Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Prime Minister Office were the Guests of Honour. The 4th Convocation of JIPMER would be held on 20th April 2013 at 10:30 am in the Auditorium, JIPMER Campus. Prof.(Dr.)M.S.Swaminathan, Emeritus Chairman and Chief Mentor, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation will be the Chief Guest and deliver the convocation address. Dr.N.K.Ganguly, President of the Institute will preside over the function. Dr.M.S.Ramachandran, Former Prof. & HOD of Medicine, Madras Medical College, Chairman, Standing Academic Committee, Member of the Governing Body, JIPMER, will be the Guest of Honour. Dr.T.S.Ravikumar, Director, JIPMER will deliver the welcome address. Dr.K.S.Reddy, Dean, JIPMER will present the candidates for award of degrees. Entrance Examination for admission to Postgraduates programs was conducted during February 2013 and 19,284 candidates applied. All the 126 seats in various disciplines were filled up during the 1st round of counseling held during March, 2013. Entrance Examination for admission to MBBS course is scheduled to be held during June 2013 and more than 45,000 candidates are likely to appear in the entrance examination for admission to 141 seats.
