JIPMER is a residential medical institution with a campus spread over 195 acres which lies
at the Western Entrance of Puducherry. The campus contains the medical and nursing
colleges, the hospital, the under graduate and postgraduate students hostels, the staff
quarters, a nationalized bank, Post Office, a temple, shopping complex, play ground and
sports grounds. In addition, a trauma care centre, superspecialty block, regional cancer
centre, auditorium, laundry, animal house, pharmacy block, women and children hospital,
basic sciences teaching block, library and administration building are also located within
the campus. Broad tree lined roads criss-cross the campus and lush tropical vegetation
forms a green canopy that hides most buildings on campus. This 1628 bedded hospital
caters patients from all over South India. Approximately 5000 patients avail the outpatient
services of the various departments each day and 67,000 patients are admitted to the
hospital annually. The Trauma care centre was constructed at a cost of 13 crore rupees
and has an area of 2400 sq.metres. The superspecialty block which houses 15 super
specialties, ten operating theatres and two interventional endoscopy theatres has a layout
area of 24,000 sq.metres and was built at a cost of 93 crore rupees. The regional cancer
centre has a cancer ward with 100 beds, 20 isolation rooms, a linear accelerator,
brachytherapy unit and CT stimulator. The newly completed projects that are being
inaugurated to day are the Women and Children’s hospital with 426 beds in an area of
28,300 sq.metres; a Basic Sciences teaching block with state-of-the-art teaching
equipment, tele-medicine facility etc., spread over 17,000 sq.metres and a hostel complex
for students and senior resident quarters with a well equipped common wellness central

The Past
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate
Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)
traces its origin to 1823 when the ‘Ecole
de Medicine de Pondicherry’ was
established by the French Government.
The college was located in the modified
buildings of the High Court, which is now
the Legislative Assembly Hall. In 1956,
The Ambassador of France laid the
foundation stone of the new medical
college that was located on the outskirts
of Pondicherry town. In the wake of the
‘de facto’ transfer of Pondicherry to the
Government of India, the college was
named Dhanvantri Medical College. This
was upgraded as a Regional Postgraduate
Centre under the Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare, Government of India and
was renamed JIPMER. The then President
of India Dr. S.Radhakrishnan inaugurated
the hospital and outpatient buildings on
13 July 1964.
ACADEMIC
Academic excellence by imparting high quality, structured, hands-on medical education
supported by a 1628 bedded teaching hospital and plenty of clinical material has been the
hallmark of JIPMER. Each year, JIPMER admits 223 undergraduate students and 160
postgraduate students to various courses. 18 students are admitted for courses in super
specialty subjects. Training is imparted by about 250 faculty and 360 resident doctors in
28 academic departments. New postgraduate and postdoctoral courses have been started
in Neurology, Neonatology, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Immunology and Transfusion
Medicine. A fellowship course in Diabetes and Ph.D courses have been started. The basic
sciences teaching block which is being inaugurated today will house the academic section

The Present
In 2008 JIPMER was given the status of an
Institution of National Importance by an
Act of Parliament, on the lines of All India
Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
and Postgraduate Institute of Medical
Education and Research, Chandigarh. The
increase in financial outlay has been
translated into an all round development
of the institution with an increase in
number of staff, students and services.
On 15 October 2008, the former
President of India Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam
inaugurated the superspecialty block, the
trauma care centre and the auditorium
and dedicated JIPMER to the nation as an
institution of national importance.
