Course Title: Agricultural Mechanics and Metal Technology Lesson Title: Creating Western Jewelry from Horseshoe and/or Concrete Nails TEKS Addressed in Lesson: 130.22 (c)(9)(E) http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter130/ch130a.html Lesson Objective: 1 2 3 4 After completing this lesson the student will be able to: safely light an oxyfuel torch; adjust an oxyfuel torch to a brazing flame; adjust an oxyfuel torch to an oxidizing flame; and braze the 8 nails in the shape of a cross or crucifix. Tools and Equipment 8 horseshoe / concrete nails, 3’ long and 1’ long Oxyfuel welding rig #3 welding tip, bronze flux, welding rods, fluxed rods Appropriate PPE - #10 goggles and safety glasses, welding gloves, pliers for handling hot metal Firebrick welding table Tip cleaner Water for cooling Drill press & bits Buffing wheel Portable drill Key Terms / Vocabulary Plastic state Oxidizing flame Soldering Flux-coated rod Ratio Oxygen Acetylene Welding tip Brazing One-to-one ratio Interest Approach/Anticipatory Set Students will learn the importance of alternative methods of joining two or more pieces of metal together, using methods other than SMAW or MIG welding. The students will be challenged to braze or bronze-weld common horse shoe nails/concrete nails into the shape of a cross or other folk art piece. The students will be encouraged to safely braze and create a piece of “jewelry” for their mom for Mother’s Day. Teaching Plan and Strategy / Presentation of New Material 1 Explain the brazing process and distribute 8 nails 2 Demonstrate brazing and explain the “plastic” bonding process involved in brazing or bronzewelding. 3 Distribute optional 1” or 3” horseshoe nails to use in the laboratory process 4. Emphasis is on developing SAFE brazing methods and patience and care in thorough brazewelding Activity/Application/ Student Engagement /Laboratory Each student will partner with a student-peer as selected by instructor. Students will lay out nails to be brazed and SAFELY assist each other in the brazing of materials. Students will be encouraged to design their “jewelry” as they like and make sure the bronze-welding or brazing layers are uniform. Students will drill a hole 1/16” or larger in diameter for project use - jewelry chain, pin attachment Evaluation / Summary Scoring Rubric: Uniformity and Braze/Bronze appearance / eye appeal Originality Demonstrating a Safe Process to complete the Project Maximum possible points 25 points 50 points 25 points 100 References/Additional Materials / Extended Learning Opportunities/ Enrichment Praxair Welding Company Posters and Power Points, IMS Online resources College & Career Readiness Standard Cross Disciplinary – Cognitive 1A1 Mathematics - IV A,1 Lesson developed by Steve Forsythe, AST / CTE Administrator, Lampasas HS ©Texas Education Agency, 2015
