Individual desks are horrible for people in wheel chairs so that it why I chose tables so it will not be as difficult for them to get around. b. Conveys high expectations to all students; I have a no tolerance for people who do not respect or follow my rules. Name: Emily Goderich b. c. Examines and uses data-informed research to improve instruction and student achievement; Collaborates with the home, school, and larger communities to foster communication and to support student learning and continuous improvement; Professional Studies Fall2012 There are not many distractions for my students with ADHD and LD. I will accommodate to all of my students who I feel need it. Everyone should be able to succeed in my classroom. Almost all of my ideas came from the book, The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T and of course what I learned in my professional studies class. I have really absorbed a lot of information from that class and I feel like I couldn’t forget it even if I wanted to. I definitely encourage parents to be involved in their student’s school life. They should always know their students grades to keep up with how they are doing in my class. Grades will be available online for the students and the parents to keep track of. The administration of the school should be corporative with how I run my classroom. I will also be courteous and considerate when choosing what I do in my classroom. B) Take the explanations above and turn it into an essay on the following page: What content have you learned from this assignment? Communication is the most important thing to achieve success in the classroom. You should always be in communication with your students, parents, or the administration. Everyone should always be aware of what is happening in your classroom so the monthly letter to parents and the constant updates on homework and classwork either on the board in class or online is very important for everyone to succeed. Having everything posted online or a simple email can help absent students catch up quicker. What skills have you learned from this assignment? I have learned many strategies that will keep students on task especially if they are ESE students. If you consider and have a better understanding of a student’s disability, you can better accommodate to their needs in the classroom. For example, if you have a student with ADD or ADHD in your classroom, keep them close to the front of the classroom and make sure they won’t get distracted. That is one strategy that I have learned this year and while completing this assignment. Name: Emily Goderich Professional Studies Fall2012 How has this assignment changed your thinking about classroom management and the learning environment? Honestly, I have never really taken the time to think about how much time a teacher puts into making a classroom management plan. I really had no idea that so much thought went into it. I look back when I went to high school and remembered why I sat in certain places while other students were moved to other places. It all has to do with where the teacher thinks you will succeed the most. I find that so interesting; something as simple as organizing how a class will be can have anything to do with how a student will learn. I learned that it has everything to do with it. How might you use either the information or skills learned in your future classroom? I will definitely save this assignment and look back at it when I have to organize my classroom. It will be a big help. Also, I want to look back on how much I have improved or changed. I might take what I have done now and then hopefully make it better in the future. FEAP in Essay form My classroom is set up to have my students sit in groups. There is enough room for my students to get up and walk around without any difficulties. The teacher’s desk is in the front of the classroom so that the students know exactly where to find me and so that I can see all of my students and keeps them on task. I put my students with ADHD and LD in the front of the classroom so that I can keep an eye on them and keep them on task with the rest of the students. All of my ESOL students are surrounded by the English speakers but they have one person at their table who speaks their language so that it makes them feel more comfortable. My rules and regulations are stated in my syllabus and are posted in the front of my class on my board next to where I put the objectives and the SWBATS so that they see it every day. If I repeat it enough times and they see it every day, they will follow them. The rules that they school assigns will also be posted in the syllabus so that if they are breaking any of the rules, I will tell them to refer to their syllabus. If they break any rules depending on the intensity of the Name: Emily Goderich Professional Studies Fall2012 issue, the punishment will differ. I will usually follow the school’s disciplinary actions such as a detention or referral since I will be teaching secondary students. My rules are short and simple because if I write out long rules, they are going to think they are being bossed around and they will walk all over me. They make their own rules as time goes on in the year. I have to keep that in mind when I am writing my rules. I feel like communication with everyone in the classroom is the most important thing. I plan on sending monthly newsletters home with my students and online for parents and students to read so that they are all aware of what is happening in my classroom. It will give them a sense of comfort knowing that their students are in good hands. Everything will be online and easy to access as well as it will be posted in my class on the board. There will be no excuses for students to miss work because they “didn’t know it was assigned.” All of my ESE students will be in the front of the classroom. They will definitely get accommodations because it is not about being fair, it is about being fair for everyone who needs it. They won’t have any distractions in the front of the classroom since I will be there and I will give extended time on any exams given because they need it and if it gets too distracting for a student, they will be able to leave the classroom to go in another class to work on their exam. IEP’s will determine how I do my lesson plans and classroom management plan. My students will be doing a lot of group work since they will all be at tables. This will be beneficial because it will allow students to be more social rather than reserved since they will be forced to work together. I know that working in groups in professional studies has allowed me to become more social and outgoing. Groups will be switched through-out the year so everyone gets a chance to meet everyone and work together. Name: Emily Goderich Professional Studies Fall2012 Most of my ideas came from the Harry Wong book and what I have learned in class. I have learned a lot through my observations and personal experiences. Those things have shaped how I think and how I will do things in my classroom in the future. I feel like parent involvement in my classroom will have to do the most with how my students will succeed. My parents were always very involved in my schools; they were always concerned with how I was doing in class and my grades. I never wanted to disappoint them so I worked hard in school and I always did well. I don’t know how things would be if my parents didn’t show an interest in how I did in school. This is why I feel like the monthly newsletters are going to make a difference in my classroom. Parents will know that they are always invited to speak to me at any time. I will make special arrangements that will allow me to meet any parent at any time.
