Chapter 6: The Land of the Southeast
Lesson 1: Coastal Plains to Mountains
Vocabulary:
1. Barrier Islands: a narrow island between the ocean and the mainland.
2. Wetlands: lands that are at times covered with water.
3. Fall Line: a line of waterfalls that marks the boundary between the Piedmont
and the Coastal Plains.
Place:
4. Outer Coastal Plain: inland from the shore.
5. Inner Coastal Plain: farther inland
6. Piedmont: area of rolling hills and beautiful valleys lies inland from the coastal
plains.
7. Appalachia: area in and around the Appalachian Mountains known for its rich
natural resources.
8. Appalachian Mountains: mountain area in the eastern United States covering
parts of eleven states.
Notes:
9. Explain how the barrier islands were created.
Sediment was created by ocean waves, currents, and rivers and dropped into the
shallow areas off the coast.
10. Tell me the difference between the Inner Coastal Plain and the Outer Coastal
Plain.
Inner Coastal Plain has higher elevation.
Lesson 2: Sunlight and Storms
Vocabulary & Places:
11. Key West: an island off the southern coast of Florida.
12. Florida Keys: chain of islands.
13. Key: a low island.
14. Hurricane: a violent storm that forms over the ocean. Its strong winds move in
a circular path.
15. Hurricane Season: time from June to the beginning of November when
hurricanes mainly occur.
Notes:
16. Describe the weather in the Florida Keys.
Winter: mild and sunny
Summer: hot and humid
17. Hurricane season is from June until the beginning of November.
18. Explain why lighthouses were built along the coast of the Southeast Region.

Lesson 3: Wildlife and Resources

19. Endangered Species: kind of animal or plant that is thought to be in danger of
becoming extinct.
20. Extinct: no longer existing.
21. Pulp: combination of wood chips, water, and chemicals used to make paper.
22. Fossil Fuel: a fuel formed in the earth from the remains of plants and animals.
23. Everglades National Park: huge area of wetlands in southern Florida.
