Newsletter – 12th June, 2015
This week has been another busy week for children across the school. May I begin by thanking the
many people who helped make our first cake sale, last week, a resounding success raising over £77 for
the school book fund. The children had a great time organising it all and even more pleasure eating a
considerable amount later!
A very large number of boxes were delivered on Thursday, full of books, to start our new collection of
guided readers. Children will be using them once they are all sorted and organised into the different
ability bands. We hope to order many more books in the coming weeks.
At the start of the week, Mr Gaylor and Miss Talbot took our Cricket Team to a tournament at Reading
Boys School. The team excelled themselves, both on the pitch and off, with outstanding behaviour.
Well done to the whole team and good luck in the Berkshire Games, which they are now looking
forward to. This was followed up by a further tournament today, at Shiplake College. Special thanks
go to Caversham Van Hire for allowing us the use of a Minibus to get to the Tournament.
As a school, we are looking for more adults to get involved in our gardening environment. Mrs Haley
has done an excellent job up to now, but would like a few more pairs of hands to build on what she has
started with the children. The children love being involved in this work, but some things are too big or
heavy for many of our children. If you can help with or without a group of little helpers, we would love
to hear from you. Just an hour or two during the week or at the weekend is all we need. Gardening
gurus are welcomed, but not essential! Please let the office know if you would be willing to help.
Next week is our ‘Sports week’ and I hope the weather will be kind to us. The dates and times are on
the attached Newsletter. All supporters are welcome to come along to watch, cheer on the entrants and
encourage the teams. Please ensure your child has sun cream applied on that day and a water bottle is
essential. I am looking forward to both KS1 and KS2 Sports Days and may the best team win!
Today has started in a wonderful way with many Greek Gods and Goddesses descending in the school
hall for a Greek Festival of Learning!
Mums, Dads, carers and friends had worked hard to dress their children for the occasion. Many life like
creatures paraded in the hall to great applause. The gathered crowd were delighted by the feast and
festival that followed. Thank you Miss Glenister and Mrs Looker and your teams of Grecian helpers for
making the morning so enjoyable for us all.
Next month we will be moving our school dinner payment methods to ‘Parent Pay’. This is an on-line
system which can be accessed from home or public libraries, etc. This system will allow you to choose
your child’s meals and pay for them in advance. Please drop in to one of the many sessions we are
running in school to find out more:
Wednesday 17th June @ 2pm
Friday 19th June @ 9am
Wednesday 24th June @ 9am
Key Stage One Sports Day will be on Wednesday 17th June and Key Stage Two on Thursday 18th June.
Both Sports Day will begin at 9.30am and finish at lunchtime. The field gate will open from 9.00am and
close at 12.15pm, each day.
On the day of your child’s Sports Day, they can come to school in their P.E. kits. We would also like the
children to wear a colour t-shirt of their house. If you are unsure what house your child is in, please
ask their class teacher.

There will be a Bonnet Parade for all pupils during
the Summer Fayre, on Saturday 4th July. If your
child would like to enter the parade, they will need
to make a bonnet following the theme of
Independence Day, which they should bring along
to the Summer Fayre. The children’s bonnets will be
judged during the parade and there will be a third,
second and first place for the most creative bonnet.
Advance Notice to all budding Scientists
There will be a ‘Mad Scientist’ assembly on
Monday 15th June for children who would like to
join this amazing after school club which will be
starting late September.

We are all very excited about Sports Day next week. Please remember to put sun cream on the children
before they come to school and that they have a sun hat in school; many thanks.
This week we have been grouping numbers in different ways and counting in intervals of 2, 5, and 10;
we were all very impressed! We have started our work on Space and have discovered that the children
think the moon is made of cheese, if only! We have enjoyed reading 'The Way Back Home' by Oliver
Jeffers which has inspired some fantastic writing from the children. Have a wonderful, peaceful and
happy weekend.
St. Anne’s Summer Fayre is taking place on Saturday 4th July.
This week we have been collecting Packet goods.
Week commencing 15th June, we would be grateful for donations of Bottled items:
(wine, soft drinks, shower gel, etc)
The children can put these donations in the box by the ICT suite.
We are at 250636 miles which is amazing and we are well on track for completing our journey into space.
The leaders on our highest point scoring board are still The Hill, with 43150 points – Well done to them for
maintaining their lead.
In second position we have Micklands Primary School with 360830 points and Theale C E Primary School are in
third position with 344160 points.
Mortimer St Mary’s C E Primary School are the first of our schools to appear on the highest average leader
board. They have an average score of 996 per person
These are amazing scores so a massive well done to them and to all the schools for encouraging your pupils to
really get active.
We have just under two weeks left to go, everything could change. Keep going!
