CLINIC EVENT: Heart Math
Monday, December 5th, 12-1 p.m.
The Institute of HeartMath is an internationally recognized nonprofit research and
education organization dedicated to helping people reduce stress, self-regulate
emotions and build energy and resilience for healthy, happy lives. HeartMath tools,
technology and training teach people to rely on the intelligence of their hearts in concert
with their minds at home, school, work and play. The HeartMath center conducts basic
research into psychophysiology, biophysics, neurocardiology, and outcome studies in
clinical, workplace, educational and military settings, frequently in collaboration with
universities, research centers and health-care-system partners. This research has
significantly advanced understanding of heart-brain interactions, heart-rate variability
(HRV) and heart-rhythm coherence, and the physiology of optimal learning and
performance.
A Heart Math class will be held on Monday, December 5th from 12-1 p.m. in the clinic
classroom. Cost is $5 per person. Please call the office (385-7711) to reserve your
spot
for
the
class.
You are welcome to eat your lunch during class--no special clothing is needed.
BOOK REVIEW: "Drop Dead Gorgeous" 2002 Kim Erickson
By Gail Eberharter M.D.
"Drop Dead Gorgeous" is an excellent resource for those looking to avoid contact with
unnecessary chemicals. Historical perspective and scientific studies help to show how
dangerous the cosmetic industry is to our health. This book is mostly focused on
women's health care products but could be useful to anyone. The author also speaks
to the onset of chemical sensitivities at any time of hormone change (menopause or
pregnancy) and why many chemicals in personal care products can trigger this. There is
a good discussion of the cumulative effects of these ingredients and the availability of
nontoxic alternatives if they exist. She also refers to A Consumers' Dictionary of
Cosmetic Ingredients by Ruth Winter that is also very helpful.
To learn more, please come join us on Tuesday, December 6th from 5:30-6:30 to hear
Dr. Sara Rodgers discuss how to identify harmful ingredients and how to choose
alternatives.
COMING IN 2012: Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle Class
It seems we're all trying to find the "magic bullet" that helps heal us from diseases and
delays the natural aging process. Put an anti-aging label on most any product, and it
flies off the shelves. Without hype or advertising, this class will go in depth with tools
and information for preventing and treating chronic illness.
Beginning on January 23, 2012, the practitioners of the Functional and Integrative
Medicine of Idaho will lead a class aimed at helping you adopt an anti-inflammatory
lifestyle. The class will be taught by Gail Eberharter, Kathy Bowen, Jolyn
Seibert and Carmen Oldenburg.
As part of this 6 lecture series, you will receive an anti-inflammatory diet and recipe
book, some practical exercises to reduce stress and improve heart health, and work with
a wellness journal to individualize your wellness goals.
The class will cover the following topics:
I.
What is an anti-inflammatory lifestyle? What are those things that trigger
inflammation in our bodies? How is our immune system involved?
II.
Understanding stress and adrenal fatigue with practical stress reduction
techniques and exercises.
III.
Understanding gastrointestinal health and foods that can contribute to
inflammation.
IV.
Understanding how inflammation affects our emotions and anxiety
levels. Looking at inflammation as causative in cardiovascular disease.
V.
Understanding how toxins can affect the body and what you can do to
minimize the impact. Discussion of supplement choices and supplement quality.
VI.
Understanding how imbalances in hormones can create inflammation and what
you can do to manage hormones in the body. Discuss relationship of insulin
resistance/diabetes to chronic inflammation.
Please come join us and make your 2012 a journey into an anti-inflammatory lifestyle!
