Annex 1 UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON ACADEMIC BOARD Committee of: Board of Governors Senior committee to: Academic Appeals Committee Academic Development Committee Academic Standards Committee Business and Community Committee Higher Education Review Board (Northbrook) Faculty Academic Boards Honorary Awards Board Professorial Board Regulated by: Articles of Government Terms of reference Subject to the requirements of external regulatory agencies and the responsibilities of the Board of Governors and Vice-Chancellor, the Academic Board has the following responsibilities: I: Academic standards 1. To be responsible for all general issues related to research, teaching and scholarship, including: (i) to ensure that academic provision meets the university’s requirements and standards in accordance with agreed policies and procedures (ii) to establish academic and related policies, regulations and strategies, including policy and procedures for the assessment and examination of the academic performance of students, and to keep these under review as required (iii) to approve criteria for the admission of students and procedures for the expulsion of students for academic reasons (iv) to be responsible for the appointment and removal of External Examiners (v) to ensure that the university has an appropriate academic appeals procedure and to monitor the conduct and outcomes of appeals (vi) to oversee the university’s relationship with professional and statutory bodies and agencies in relation to the quality of academic provision. (vii) to keep under review the quality of the student experience. II: Academic development 2. To be responsible for considering the development and future direction of the university’s academic activities and advising the Board of Governors and Vice-Chancellor thereon, including the development of the corporate plan and advice on the resources required to support existing and planned academic activities. 3. To recommend new higher education qualifications for award by the university and the withdrawal of higher education qualifications currently awarded, for ratification by the Board of Governors. 1 Annex 1 III: Other responsibilities 4. “To have due regard within its decisions to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations between different people, in accordance with the public sector general duty of the Equality Act (2010).” 5. To determine the award of honorary degrees, honorary university fellowships and honorary visiting fellowships and to receive reports of honorary faculty fellowships awarded by Faculty Academic Boards. 6. To be responsible for establishing procedures for the award of professorships. 7. To develop, monitor and review as necessary the effectiveness of the university’s academic committee structure, including the appropriateness of the Board’s communication and reporting mechanisms with its committees and with the Board of Governors, the Vice-Chancellor and the university’s management structures. 8. To receive reports from its committees in a format agreed by the Board, at regular intervals or periodically as requested by the Board. 9. With the approval of the Vice-Chancellor and Board of Governors, to establish such committees as it considers necessary to enable it to fulfil its responsibilities. 10. To advise on such other matters as the Board of Governors or the Vice-Chancellor may refer to the Academic Board. Delegation of authority The Academic Board retains the overall responsibilities defined in its terms of reference and approved by the Board of Governors. However, the Academic Board may delegate specific activities and authorities to its reporting committees as it considers appropriate to enable it to fulfil its responsibilities.
