3. Recyclable Plastic Films in Wyckoff, NJ Mass Balance Estimates
The County of Bergen, NJ management of plastic film materials in their solid waste handling
program is outside the scope of the Wyckoff Green Team and the Wyckoff Environmental
Commission. Little is known about the extent to which Bergen County through its responsible
agency for recycling, the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA), does in the area of plastic film
recycling relative to rigid plastic article recycling. Unknown is whether any data specific to the
amounts of plastic film treated as municipal waste versus that which is recycled in the County is
actually monitored or maintained.
For the Town of Wyckoff in a 2011 study conducted by the Wyckoff Green Team it was estimated
the amount of recyclable polyethylene plastic film usage for a Town population of roughly 16,000
residents to be 194,000 lbs. The Town of has one single point of polyethylene film recycling, the
Stop & Shop grocery store. In a recent survey taken from the store manager of the Wyckoff Stop &
Shop grocery store it was estimated that they collect 28,700 lbs. of post-consumer polyethylene
films annually. It should be noted that this does not include pre-consumer polyethylene films used
typically in secondary packaging applications related to food container packaging necessary for
shipping (i.e. pallet shrink wrap). The unaccounted annual difference is 168,000 lbs. and is assumed
to be treated as solid municipal waste sent to landfill, since the Town’s contracted recycler does
not recycle any plastic films.
Based on the best available information the amount recycling of post-consumer polyethylene films
in the Town of Wyckoff would be 43,000 lbs for the previous 18 months.
