Containerised Cargo
Terminal container 80 000m2, entirely paved with a wharf of 270 m, 10.5 m deep team, offers the best
conditions of safety for the goods.
All port equipment is owned by the stevedoring company. De-stuffing of containers rarely take place
in the container yard due to risk of theft and the small size of the container yard. The consortium
restricts access to the container yard, unlike other areas of the port where access easily can be
obtained. Containers are however opened in the terminal for customs inspection but resealed
immediately in the presence of the forwarding company/superintendent.
Transit time for containers in the port for WFP is between 6 and 9 whole days (between discharge of
the vessel and exit from the port area). Maersk is the largest of the companies operating in the
container terminal and has insufficient equipment and space to move the containers rapidly outside
the port as customs are very slow.

Shore Handling: Containerised Cargo
As of March 2004 the Port of Conakry has introduced demurrage on all containers that remain in the
port more than 10 working days THC is approximately USD 220 and USD 370 for 20” and 40”.
Demurrage is paid to the sea freight company. for vehicles, there is no demurrage charge during 15
days. If the Forwarding Agency or the Clearing Agent is using a long time to clear the goods, inspite
receiving the necessary documents in time, and the process of discharging the vessel thus takes
more than 10 days, the forwarding company will have to pay the demurrage without billing it to the
customer.
