Dallas ISD worked over the week with the Dallas County
Health Department, the EPA, the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality and the North Texas Poison Center to
clean the mercury spill at School. The mercury is not a
health hazard to students or staff at the school as per the
health-based recommendations of the federal Agency for
Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
Based on indoor air testing results, short duration of
exposure and limited number of locations where the
mercury was detected, health experts at the UT
Southwestern Medical Toxicology service, the North Texas
Poison Center, and the ATSDR have advised that no health
effects for students, family members, or teachers are
expected from the spill.
The mercury was brought to school by a student who found
a container of it near his/her home. It was spilled in a
hallway while parent-teacher conferences were taking place
on October 17th and was never reported until Friday. .
The health, safety and well-being of our students and staff is
always our top priority and we are doing our best to work
through this extraordinary situation. The Dallas
Independent School District is greatly appreciative of the
extra effort taken over the week by a number of agencies to
assist with this effort. Students are back in their classrooms.
Message from Ms. Torres,
Thank you all the supportive and understanding families
during the recent episode that our school campuses
encountered during the incident involving Mercury. Many of
you attended the public meeting regarding questions and
concerns involving the incident but we assured that things
were/are perfectly safe for all our students to attend class
each day by the expert panel in attendance night. Safety is
number one here at Urban Park.
Parents are powerful models; make
sure your child…
A.) Arrives at school on TIME every day.
B.) Does his/her HOMEWORK every day.
C.) READS every day.

Counselor’s Corner
Dear Parents,
On November 12 – 16th, our campus will take part
along with other Dallas ISD schools in an antibullying week entitled, “Lead the Way, Be a
HERO”. This is a week where all Dallas ISD
campuses will work with our students to learn
what bullying is and what to do if they have an
issue with a bully. Some of the activities that
will take place at Urban Park include morning
announcements about bullying, daily activities in
the classrooms, and everyone will have an
opportunity to state they will not be a bully but
be kind by signing our Rachel’s Challenge banner.
Urban Park students have already received
counseling lessons about bullying in the month of
October, so in November, they will receive a
follow up lesson called WHO. WHO is a program
developed by the mental health association that
teaches our students how to stay safe at home,
school, in the community, and on the internet.

like to share some things that we are thankful for
at
Urban Park Elementary:
We are thankful for students who eagerly come to
school to learn as much as is possible each day.
We are thankful for a beautiful school where
students can come to learn and grow.
We are thankful for teachers and staff who give
many hours of their days to provide students with
the instruction and guidance needed to help them
succeed. And last but not least, we are thankful for
parents who support the efforts of our school.
