JAPAN-AUSTRALIA MARINE SCIENCE WORKSHOP
Summary Statement
11-12 JULY 2013, TOKYO, JAPAN
1. Marine Science experts from Japan and Australia convened at a workshop in Tokyo, Japan to
discuss Understanding Global Change Impacts and Opportunities in Tropical and Subtropical Marine
Ecosystems from 11-12 July 2013.
2. The workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology and the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research
and Tertiary Education, reflecting a commitment from the 14th Japan – Australia Joint
Committee Meeting on Cooperation in Science and Technology on 23 August 2012 on the
importance of ongoing marine research collaboration between Japan and Australia.
3. The workshop was attended by leading research agencies and institutions from both countries
and co-chaired by Dr Yoshihisa Shirayama, Executive Director, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth
Science and Technology and Mr John Gunn, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Institute of
Marine Science.
4. Both countries recognised three areas of priority focus for collaboration in marine scientific
research: ocean acidification; adaptability to climate change; and identifying new
technologies to aid in marine science research.
5. As a result of the workshop it was agreed that both countries would develop a work program
to guide future collaborative research into tropical and sub-tropical marine science between
Japan and Australia.
