LATIN AMERICAN HEALTH CARE ISSUES
We are going to take our look at “Emergency Medical Vocabulary” to the next level. As a school, we just learned a lot
about the Invisible Children of Uganda in Mission Week. Some students also participated in TOMS’ “One Day Without
Shoes.” Go to this www.onedaywithoutshoes.com and click on the map under the slide “Where we Give.” Take a look
at the Latin American countries, and watch the TOMS video.
As we know, there are many health concerns that exist in Latin America but not the US, and in areas of intense poverty
but not necessarily with those in affluent areas. Your job is to do write a 500-word essay in English about a Latin
American health care issue of your choice. (How long is 500 words? Well, this paragraph is 127.) In your short paper, you
must 1)explain the science behind the issue, 2)determine how Hispanic culture and substandard health care due to
struggling economies influence the health issue and how it is treated, 3) how the issues and treatment compare to the
US, and 4) what you think needs to be done to correct the issue. This is due at the beginning of next class.

click “Health Topics.” Scroll through the list, and choose a Health Care topic that interests you. Write the name of the
issues here, and give a brief summary from the website:
