You must also read at least one other text by a writer who comes from a significantly different cultural perspective. You will probably read their works translated into English. For the purposes of this assessment, a text written by a pre-20th century writer is considered as a different cultural perspective. CRITICAL REPUTATION This means books which are considered by literature professionals to be quality writing. You need to provide WRITTEN PROOF, on your cover sheet, of critical reputation for TWO of the texts you read. 1. One proof is that the book has won, or been nominated for, a literary prize e.g. the Booker Prize (UK), the Pulitzer Prize (USA), the Carnegie Medal (USA children’s), the Montana Book Award (formerly the Watties Book of the Year (NZ), the Esther Glenn Award (NZ children’s). Such books are tagged in the library catalogue so you can find the evidence. Give the award and the year gained when you fill in your cover sheet for that text. 2. Another possibility is that the book, or the writer, is discussed in a text about literature. Go to the school library reference section, and check your text/author in the index of one of the following. Give the name of the book and the pages where the text/author is discussed when you fill in your cover sheet for that text.
