TASK DESCRIPTION
In this task you will be composing two letters about daily life in Ancient China. These
letters will be semi-fictional, written from the perspective of people living in Ancient
China. This is not an essay and you should not insert quotes. However the information
that you include needs to be historically accurate and based upon your research
These letters will be written in class.
The first letter will be written from the perspective of a Noble (Shi) living in Ancient
China. This letter needs to contain information on the following topics; housing, clothing,
recreation, family.
The second letter will be written from the perspective a Merchant (Shang) living in
Ancient China. This letters will contain information on the following; family, trade and
working life
To do this successfully you will need to complete the following steps
Step 1: Research



Conduct research into the life of a noble and the life of a merchant using a range of
relevant sources
o Four sources for a noble and four sources for a merchant
o You must use some books and some websites
Complete research notes on the attached research table
Remember to bring this to class you will use it to construct your response
Step 2: Plan Your Letters


Think about the topics for each paragraph of your letter
Order these topics so that they best make sense
Step 3: Write Your Letters





These letters will be written in class
Write your letter using the correct letter format
Think about the perspective that you are writing your letter from (Noble or Merchant)
You will need to incorporate relevant and detailed historical information
You will also need to integrate relevant historical terms and concepts
