B e v e r l e y Tay l o r S o r e n s o n Partnership Arts Reaching & Teaching in Schools The BYU Arts Bridge Program The Arts Bridge Teaching Initiative follows the model from Arts Bridge America, a national network of similar programs at about 30 universities throughout the United States. In this program, Art Scholars teach collaboratively with an elementary classroom teacher who has an interest in and commitment to implementing the arts into their curriculum. Art Scholars are BYU students majoring in an area of fine arts such as visual arts, music, dance, drama, or media arts. In addition to working with a classroom teacher, the Art Scholar will receive guidance and support from a BYU Faculty Mentor. The goals of the Arts Bridge Program are: Classroom teachers will learn how to better implement an art form using student arts specialists. BYU arts scholars will benefit from classroom teacher expertise in classroom management, child development and core curriculum. Children will receive a quality arts experience. Program Description and Application Information for Applicants: Here is an expanded list of the duties and responsibilities of an Arts Bridge Scholar: 1. The Arts Scholars receive a stipend for their work completed up to 50 hours. It is also possible to receive Practicum credit dependent upon department. Whether scholars receive credit, a stipend or both will depend on their department’s practicum requirements and whether or not they have already completed a practicum. 2. Scholars work hours will include: time in the classroom, creating lesson plans, preparing materials, project documentation, and travel. 3. The majority of the 50 hours should be spent working in the classroom. The scholar is required to make a minimum of 10 visits in the school. 4. The Art Scholars are expected to keep a blog that documents their experience in the program and update it within a week after each school visit. Blog entries could include, but are not limited to: journal entries, photos, video documentation, lesson plans, and articles. An about section should be included at the beginning of the blog and a final reflection is due upon completion of the project. These blogs are shared with the BYU ARTS Partnership Executive Board and potential participants. Classroom teachers, faculty mentors, and Arts Bridge administrators will review and comment on this blog throughout the project. 5. The Arts Scholar is responsible for turning in signed media release forms for any child that is shown in photographs or videos on the blog. Media release forms are to be turned in to the Arts Bridge Coordinator by October 30th, 2015. 6. Arts Scholars will provide transportation to and from the school they are assigned to. If transportation is needed, Art Scholars can speak to the Arts Bridge Coordinator about other options. Partial reimbursement will be provided for mileage. 7. Arts Scholars will attend a training meeting in September where they will receive more detailed instructions and guidance. 8. Arts Scholars will attend an orientation meeting in the fall where they will meet with their classroom teacher and Faculty Mentor to brainstorm their project and discuss scheduling. Schedules should be turned in to the Arts Bridge Coordinator two weeks before their experience begins. 9. The Art Scholar and teacher should plan a final project that will be a culminating event such as a performance, exhibit, school event, etc. 10. A Faculty Mentor will observe and evaluate the Art Scholar in the classroom and have a project midpoint interview with them. 11. Arts Scholars will have the opportunity to meet with their fellow scholars midway through their experience to share successes, concerns, and exchange ideas regarding their Arts Bridge experiences. 12. The first school visit will be purely observational to acquaint the student to the classroom environment. 13. Art scholars will give a presentation about their experience with their classroom teacher at the final celebration in March 2016.
