Unit 10:
ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE OF ATOMS
Textbook Chapter 11 Sections 1 through 10
At the end of this chapter you should be able to:
1. Trace the history of the electron structure of the atom.
2. Draw a picture of the major models of the atom.
3. Understand which subatomic particle is involved in bonding.
4. Understand how light studies led to the present model of the atom.
5. Describe what light is.
6. Describe the components of a wave and how they are related;
wavelength, frequency.
7. Know the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.
8. Define the term quantum.
9. Determine the energy of a photon.
10. Explain the photoelectric effect.
11. Explain line spectra and how Bohr's model of the atom comes from
it and the photoelectric effect.
12. Explain how line spectra can be used to identify a particular
element or compound.
13. Describe Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
14. Describe Schrodinger's quantum mechanical model.
15. Define the term orbital and know the different types of orbitals.
16. Explain what each of the four quantum numbers of an electron
mean.
17. Determine the quantum numbers for a given electron according to
Schrodinger's model.
18. Describe the location of an electron based on its quantum
numbers.
19. Know the order of orbital filling of electrons in a multiple
electron atom.
20. Explain the Pauli Exclusion Principle.
21. Define Hund's Rule
22. Write the electron or orbital configuration for any atom.
23. Predict and write the electron configuration of an element from
its position on the periodic table.
24. Define the ground state of an atom and the excited state of an
atom.
25. Identify the core and valence electrons in an atom.
26. Recognize whether an atom is in its ground state or an excited
state.
